The Brown County Rotary Club will meet over Zoom at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.

The speaker will be Maggie Sullivan, watershed coordinator for Lake Monroe. She will discuss the development of a watershed management plan for Lake Monroe, Indiana’s largest reservoir. The overall objective is to reduce pollution coming into Lake Monroe from its watershed, which includes nearly three-quarters of Brown County. Over the past year, she has worked to compile a list of community concerns, consolidate data from past studies, collect new water quality data, observe conditions in the watershed, and engage community members in citizen science. The complete watershed management plan will be published in January 2022 with implementation to follow.

Maggie earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural and biological engineering from Purdue University. She has experience in environmental consulting, environmental education, community organization and sustainable agriculture. She is a Bloomington native, a Girl Scout, and an enthusiastic if unskilled gardener.

Friends of Lake Monroe (a nonprofit organization) secured funding for the two-year project through a 319 grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Matching funds were provided by the Monroe County Stormwater Board, City of Bloomington’s Utilities Service Board, City of Bloomington Office of Economic and Sustainable Development, and Sassafras Audubon Society. The project’s steering committee includes representatives from 20 organizations in Brown, Monroe, and Jackson counties.

Members of the community, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to our community, are invited to attend the WFH session. Visit www.RotaryClubofBrownCounty.org and click on the “Contact us” URL to obtain a link to the Zoom meeting.
