Boys and girls track

April 16

Coach’s comments: Sophomore Abby Fleetwood competed Friday night in the Franklin Central Distance Showcase. Running in Heat 3, Fleetwood cruised to a 5:18.76 for the true mile distance of 1609 meters. Meet management also recorded, by FAT, their time at the usual contested distance of 1600. Fleetwood clocked a 5:16.50 to set a new school record which was previously set by Jenny Kulow in 2006 (5:17.42). Fleetwood finished seventh in her heat and 29th overall. The participants in the annual meet at Franklin Central must qualify to earn their spot in the field. The meet attracts some of the best distance running talent in the state of Indiana. The full Eagle squad will return to the track Tuesday when they travel to Bloomington South for a dual meet with the Panthers.

Boys golf

April 12

Martinsville 195, Brown County 234

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 46 (medalist), Bradley Arndt 60, Jordan Burnett 63, Clay Austin 65, Dylan Taylor 72.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles lost their home opener to Martinsville on Monday, April 12, but the 234 they posted was 12 strokes better than their score in last week’s match with Hauser. Brown County’s Cooper VanNess tied for medalist honors with a 46. Bradley Arndt and Jordan Burnett shaved strokes off their last week’s performance, firing a 60 and 63 respectively. Clay Austin shot a 65, and Dylan Taylor recorded a 72. “It was gratifying to see the improved scores, and the expectation is for those numbers to continue to drop. Cooper is certainly capable of going lower, and he will in time. A couple of the others should be getting down to the mid-50s, so I anticipate our team scores to continue to improve,” said coach Brad Baughman. The Eagles will play a three-way match with Edgewood and Owen Valley Thursday, April 15, at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington and return to the same course Saturday, April 17, for the Mustang Invitational.

April 15

Edgewood 191, Owen Valley 194, Brown County 237

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 45, Bradley Arndt 64, Jordan Burnett 64, Clay Austin 64, Dylan Taylor 68.

Coach’s comments: In a three-way match with Edgewood High School and Owen Valley High School, the Eagles battled but fell well short of seriously challenging either team. Landon Ringler of Edgewood took medalist honors with a 40.

April 19

Greencastle 337, Indian Creek 357, Brownstown Central 376, Clay City 378, Owen Valley 383, Edgewood 385, Brown County 481

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 100, Clay Austin 123, Bradley Arndt 129, Jordan Burnett 129, Dylan Taylor 138.

Coach’s comments: The varsity golf team competed in its first 18-hole match of the season at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington. The Eagles finished eighth in the eight-team Mustang Invitational. “It was a tough day for all five of our golfers, but the inexperience was invaluable,” said coach Brad Baughman. The Eagles will return to Cascades in June to compete in the IHSAA sectional. Brown County hosts Brownstown Central Monday, April 19 at 5 p.m.
