May 3

Owen Valley 185, Brown County 232

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 46, Clay Austin 60, Bradley Arndt 61, Jordan Burnett 65, Dylan Taylor 70.

Coach’s comments: After two matches last week at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, we returned home to Salt Creek Golf Retreat for a match with WIC foe Owen Valley. The little bit of momentum we picked up from our second match last week seemed to fizzle out in our match with the Patriots, and our score was a few strokes higher than I was expecting. While I know we are getting better, I also know that the numbers do not always support that claim. One day soon we will eliminate some of the shots that are costing us, and we will post a score more representative of our abilities. We are scheduled to host Mitchell on Wednesday, May 5 at 5 p.m.

May 11

Hauser 208, Brown County 246

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 46 (medalist), Clay Austin 59, Jordan Burnett 69, Dylan Taylor 72.

Coach’s comments: With only four players in our lineup right now, there is no wiggle room to toss out scores. Once again, our team score is disappointing, and I know we are capable of better. Our leader, Cooper VanNess, tied two Hauser players for medalist honors with a 46. Had it not been for some serious putting woes, Cooper was looking at a solid 40 or 41 because his ball striking was very respectable. We are grateful to have another opportunity to compete with Indian Creek Wednesday, May 12, at Tameka Woods Golf Course. We are in the last third of our season now and we should be seeing some better results.

May 12

Indian Creek 189, Brown County 239

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 47, Clay Austin 58, Jordan Burnett 65, Dylan Taylor 69.

Coach’s comments: The Braves kept their No. 1 and No. 2 out of the lineup and they still had enough left to beat us by 50 strokes. Freshman Clay Austin has had two consecutive rounds in the 50s, and he has now taken over the No. 2 position for us. We had a productive week of practice sandwiched around the two matches. I am seeing huge improvements on the range and the practice green. We really need to see some of those skills carry over to the course this Saturday when we compete in the WIC championships at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

WIC Championships

Brown County 440 (11th of 11)

Coach’s comments: We may have finished last in the conference, but our scores were significantly better than they had been, and that is definitely something for us to build on. The 440 we shot was 41 strokes better than the previous 18-hole score we recorded about a month ago in the Mustang Invitational. Freshman Clay Austin and junior Jordan Burnett both had season bests. Austin’s 109 included a 53 on the back and a 56 on the front side. Both scores eclipsed his previous best nine-hole score. Jordan broke the 60 barrier for the first time this season with a 57 on the front and a 56 on the back, and sophomore Dylan Taylor continued to show improvement. We had an outstanding performance from our No. 1, Cooper VanNess, who carded an 83. Cooper was just a single stroke away from making the 15-member WIC All-Conference team. It is more than just our scores that have encouraged me. We are also showing skill development in our practices, and the boys are starting to carry themselves more like golfers. With four dual matches and one invitational remaining before the sectional, I expect to see continued growth and look forward to a positive end of the season. Congratulations to Northview for their conference win and to conference medalist Keaton Parmley from Greencastle who fired an outstanding 71. We host Indian Creek Wednesday, May 19, and Cooper will have a chance to compete with two of the conference’s best players, Brayton Christie and Clark Haywood. Each shot a 77 in the WIC, good for a five-way tie for third place.
