Candidates file for open town council seat

0

Seven candidates will be vying this afternoon for an open seat on the Nashville Town Council during a special meeting starting at 4 p.m.

The seat became available when council Vice President Alisha Gredy purchased a home just outside town limits.

The council voted in the same meeting when Gredy’s resignation was announced to drop district residency lines inside town and elect all members at-large from here on out, so the new council person will be able to live anywhere in the town limits of Nashville.

The candidates are:

  • James H. “Jim” Hays
  • Dan Klaker
  • Tyra Miller
  • Raymond D. Modglin
  • Penny Scroggins
  • Mark T. Smith
  • Emily Stone

The deadline to submit a letter of interest for the open seat was 4 p.m. Friday, July 9. Read the candidates’ letters of interest below. The statutory rules for residency and other requirements are on the final two pages of the document posted below.

The new member will be chosen by majority vote of the council. Council seats are traditionally nonpartisan.

Members of the public may attend the meeting in person or virtually this afternoon to listen to the candidates pitch for why they should be chosen and to hear current council members ask them questions. It will be conducted in person at Town Hall at 4 p.m. and offered virtually at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88469019597, meeting ID 884 6901 9597.
