Free legal aid phone clinic set for this week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, July 27 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on July 27 between noon and 1:30 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

Back-to-school event happening at church

BEAN BLOSSOM — Faith Full Gospel Church, 6881 State Road 135 North, will host its second annual Back-To-School Bash on Saturday, July 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be backpacks filled with school supplies, a bounce house, face painting, a dunk tank, cornhole games, pony rides, a resource table, fellowship, food drinks and more. The event is free and open to all.

Vouchers available for back-to-school expenses

St. Vincent de Paul has school vouchers available for parents, foster parents, grandparents and guardians of Brown County school-age children. They are available for pickup at St. Vincent de Paul on Long Lake Road from 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates: Saturdays, July 31 and Aug. 7 and Mondays, Aug. 2 and 9.

Vouchers are valued at $60 and are available for each school-age child in the family. Vouchers may be used to purchase school supplies, backpacks, shoes, socks and underwear. They can be redeemed at Walmart’s customer service desk at 2025 Merchant Mile in Columbus until Aug. 10 at 9 p.m.

Redistricting meeting to be in Columbus

COLUMBUS — Hoosiers have been invited to a series of public meetings across the state on Aug. 6 and 7 to provide feedback on Indiana’s redistricting process.

Indiana is required to redraw its districts for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Indiana House of Representatives and Indiana Senate following the nationwide census every 10 years. Before legislators are expected to return to the Statehouse in mid-to-late September to redraw the district boundaries, public meetings will take place in each of Indiana’s nine congressional districts. The meetings will be grouped into geographic areas, including north, south and central.

The southern group will meet at Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus, 4475 Central Ave. from 4 to 6 p.m. State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute), chair of the Senate Committee on Elections, will chair the meeting.

Meetings will be livestreamed and archived at iga.in.gov.

Local church hosting community day

New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 North, will host a community day on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome for free food, games, bounce houses, music, giveaways, fellowship and more. Free haircuts will be available for kids.

Many activities scheduled at goat farm

BELMONT — The Goat Conspiracy, 6022 Kent Road, will host a soap-making workshop on Sunday, Aug. 8 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will be able to make a batch of soap, leaving with five bars, and taste goat cheeses. Those interested will also be able to tour the farm and meet some of the goats. The cost is $80 and registration is required.

Goat farm tours are ongoing and can be scheduled at mutual convenience. The cost is $10 per person, $5 for children under 12 with a $35 minimum charge. Tours are about an hour long and must be scheduled in advance.

Community development group meets monthly

HELMSBURG — Helmsburg Community Development is a nonprofit group working to redevelop Helmsburg. The group aims to improve infrastructure, revitalize businesses in the area and bring in new homes and families.

The group meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Brown County Community Church, 2370 W. Main St. in Helmsburg. The next meeting is Aug. 11.

Jeep, motorcycle rally to aid fire department

The Brown County Volunteer Fire Department will have a Red Line Ride fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the local fire department will honor those who lost their lives in the attack with a fundraiser.

The route will begin at the House of Thunder, 4413 State Road 46 East, and travel through Solsberry, Tulip Trestle, Bedford and Story. The event will end with food and music.

The cost is $25 per person and includes one meal ticket. All proceeds go toward the Brown County Volunteer Fire Department. Register by Friday, July 30 for a free commemorative shirt.

Reunion happening at history center in August

The Sturgeon Reunion will be at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., on Saturday, Aug. 14.

The gathering begins at 9:30 a.m. with a future reunion planning meeting. There will be a Brown County history overview program and information about Sturgeons of note — including Sarah Spicer-Hardin, a descendant of Simpson Sturgeon — at 10:30 a.m.

A catered luncheon will be served at 11:45 a.m. The deadline for reservations is Sunday, Aug. 1, the cost is $18 per person for the luncheon portion only.

There will also be an opportunity for a tour of the Pioneer Village at 1 p.m. and directions to a cemetery with Sturgeon family graves.

Church to host women’s tea this month

BEAN BLOSSOM — A partnership of women from Bean Blossom Community Church and Brown County Community Church will host “Joy in the Morning Friendship Tea” at the Bean Blossom Community Church, 5046 State Road 135 North, on Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. The tea welcomes all women of the Brown County community.

The event will include icebreaker games, a welcome and prayer, tea and brunch, special music, a guest testimony, announcements and closing prayer. There is no cost to attend. Childcare will be provided and transportation is available if needed.

Virtual information sessions for caretakers set

Thrive Alliance will have a virtual information session for those interested in the Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) Program on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Volunteers help enhance an individual’s quality of life by making decisions on that person’s behalf which reflect, as much as possible, the individual’s own choices and preferences.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is another educational series by Thrive Alliance designed to provide caregivers with the tools needed to take care of themselves and those to whom they provide care. The program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Classes consist of six sessions virtually via Zoom every Wednesday, Aug. 25 through Sept.29, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Nashville Farmers Market now open Sundays

The Nashville Farmers Market will be open every Sunday through October from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.

Shoppers can find seasonal produce grown by local farmers, eggs and baked goods. Various meats are also offered. Local growers will sell shrubs, perennials and annuals for shoppers’ gardens.

Local crafters and artists share their talents in a variety of forms: Handwoven goods, soy and beeswax candles and more. Locally made goat’s milk soaps and bath and body products are also available.

The market doubles SNAP and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits up to $10 per shopper per week. Stop by the information booth for details.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale is underway. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.
