Because of increased cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, Brown County’s We Care Gang has decided to cancel this year’s Abe Martin Picnic and Outhouse Races originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18.

The next picnic and race are now scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.

The outhouse races and picnic in downtown Nashville are a major fundraiser for the We Care Gang, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization which offers aid to county residents in need of short-term assistance for food, shelter (rent), utilities, basic living, and some health-related needs. The primary target group for this aid has been working people dealing with financial hardships who may fall through the cracks of traditional assistance programs, including the elderly and those with children in their homes.

The group relies on other established organizations and respected community leadership for case screenings and references. Assistance is provided on a case-by-case basis and is always subject to the availability of funds and the number of cases submitted.

“Even though our major fundraiser has been postponed,” the group said in a press release, “we have continued to provide aid to requests in 2020 and 2021.”

All donations to the organization are tax-deductible. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Donations and offers to volunteer can be made to the We Care Gang by writing the group at P.O. Box 1492, Nashville, IN 47448. Contact can also be made through their website at WWW.wecaregang.org or by email at [email protected].
