BRIGHT SPOT: Weekend Backpacks program reaches fundraising goal

Despite not having its annual fundraising event the Brown County Weekend Backpacks program managed to meet its fundraising goal for 2021.

Brown County Weekend Backpacks had to cancel its Touch-A-Truck fundraiser this year and last year due to COVID-19.

The backpack program is a community-led program and 501(c)3, started in 2014, with the goal of keeping hungry children fed with nutritious food all weekend long.

This is an all-volunteer nonprofit that filled 3,527 bags this past school year and the bags were distributed to children in food insecure households. BCWB depends on this fundraiser to help offset the cost of food. Bags of food are also given to children over the summer as well.

Each child receives enough food for two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners, plus two snacks and a piece of fresh fruit each weekend at no cost.

Even with the cancellation of their annual Touch-A-Truck event supporters of the program donated enough money to allow for the backpack program to exceed its fundraising goal of $8,000.

In August Duke Energy donated $2,000 to the program.

“We are grateful to so many people for helping us achieve our mission of keeping hungry children fed on the weekends” said Jan Swigert, president of the backpack program.
