LETTER: Jazz quartet to perform at church

To the editor:

Blue Django, a jazz quartet featuring Brown County violinist Carolyn Dutton, will be performing on Sunday evening, Dec. 5 at St. David’s Church in Bean Blossom. The concert starts at 7 p.m.

The group will be playing music from the Paris jazz scene in the 1930s. The concert will be informal and family-friendly with a “jazzy” feel.

The original 1930s band who played this music was led by Stephane Grappelli, considered by many today as the dean of jazz violinists, and Django Reinhardt, a gypsy guitarist whose driving flamboyant style and unorthodox technique have baffled and intrigued players for decades.

The combo’s makeup — strings only, no percussion, reed or brass instruments — resulted in a style characterized by a sweet, lyrical melody over a driving percussive background, a sound like no other in the history of jazz.

Masks will be required for this event. We hope you can join us on Dec. 5!
