TOWN NEWS: New town attorney selected; spots designated for carriages

Nashville Town council selects new attorney

Nashville Town Council selected a new attorney at their December meeting who will begin in 2022.

The council accepted the bid from Wanda Jones, a local attorney who has practiced law in Brown County for about 14 years.

Jones’ approval came after council reopened bids in November, when hers was the only bid received by the Nov. 18 deadline.

Council member Anna Hofstetter said that it was “nothing personal” against Jones, but she thought that the council needed “a good pool of people to choose from, to know we’re making the best decision.”

Two other bids were received by the new deadline of Dec. 16. One was from local public defender Jacob Moore and another from an attorney in Bedford.

Jones’ bid was approved unanimously. Her retainer is $750 per month, $150 per hour of additional town attorney services and $20 per hour for paralegal services.

The current town attorney, James T. Roberts, announced his retirement to the town council in September. The council advertised a legal notice looking for his replacement after he informed council of his retirement, which begins in January of 2022.

Roberts was town attorney for 12 years before transitioning to the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office for five years to serve as deputy prosecuting attorney.

He came back to serve as the town attorney at the beginning of this year.

Spots designated for horse carriages

Nashville Town Council approved two ordinances on Dec. 16 for horse-drawn carriage parking and a new one-way street.

The ordinance for horse carriages allows two parking spots on East Franklin Street to be officially designated as horse-drawn carriage spots only.

Horse carriages from two different stables hitch on the street by Artist Colony Inn, which has also been a loading zone for the businesses in the area.

The parking spots will allow for three carriages to use the area.

Council also approved an ordinance to make Pittman House Lane — between Van Buren Street and Old School Way — a one-way street.

This change makes the street one-way from Van Buren to Old School Way, eastbound.
