Letters to the editor for week of Jan. 5

Recent Democrat story was a ‘gift this Christmas’

To the editor:

It was truly magical to read all the positive letters to the editor and the story celebrating the life and legacy of Howard Hughes. It was a wonderful gift this Christmas!

Howard had a great influence on Brown County and his creativity in gifting sets a high standard for all those who are fortunate to be able to pay it forward. His good friend Marcia assisted by our Brown County Community Foundation also deserve our great thanks.

Let us continue to celebrate Christmas long into the New Year. We can all give something!

Rita Simon, Brown County

New program to help find those prone to wandering

To the editor:

Project Lifesaver has come to Brown County! Project Lifesaver combines electronic technologies with advanced training for search and rescue personnel in order to help public safety agencies quickly locate people prone to wandering — such as someone with Alzheimer’s disease, autism, any dementia or related illness — who has become lost. Searches in our Brown County hills can be especially challenging.

TRIAD and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department are pleased to let you know that Project Lifesaver is ready for action. It is partially funded by grants from and through the Brown County Community Foundation and from the sheriff’s department funding. Our deputies have now received the necessary training and equipment.

Individuals enrolled in this program wear a personalized, wristwatch-sized radio transmitter that allows first responders to rapidly locate them. Rescue personnel receive specialized training, not only on how to operate the tracking equipment, but also on key techniques to address behavioral and communication challenges specific to people with cognitive conditions. This is a skill critical to gaining the person’s trust and facilitating a safe return home.

Because of this BCCF grant and some additional grants through the foundation, the cost of the program to individuals can be offset. We expect to make this program available and affordable to any interested Brown County resident.

If you would like to know more or wish to explore whether this would be the right option for someone in your family, please call TRIAD at 812-988-5606. Someone will call you back to discuss the program.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our community!

Sincerely,

Laura Young, TRIAD
