VETERANS’ CORNER: What veterans should know heading into the New Year

By CHRIS SNELL, guest columnist

It’s January 2022 and I’m sure many folks are looking forward to a new year. We want to wish everyone a happy New Year and look forward to serving you this year.

Input needed on legislative issues

We have some work being done in preparation for the Indiana Military Legislative Day, which is going to be on Jan. 10, 2022.

We are informing you of this very important day because there are many bills in the works regarding our veterans. Learn more about the Indiana Military Veterans Legislative Day at www.veteranlegislativeday.org and get more information about the particular bills being put forth.

Our office desires to be a voice for Brown County to our representatives, so any input about legislative issues you would like for us to go to your representatives with will help. Please feel free to contact our office to give us your thoughts.

Family relief fund available

Did you know that there is a military family relief fund that assists veterans who are experiencing a genuine financial hardship? You can visit the website www.in.gov/dva/about-idva/links/military-family-relief-fund/ or you can contact our office for more information. We also have pamphlets available at the Brown County Veterans Service Office.

VA visitation policy update

The Indianapolis VA Medical Center and all Indiana VA outpatient clinics are changing their current visitation policy to address the anticipated surge of the COVID-19 omicron variant. They changed their policy beginning Dec. 28.

Fostering thankfulness

Sam Banter has been our veteran support liaison for the entire year of 2021.

During that time, you may have gotten to know him as the guy who removes stumps from Banter Stump Removal. Sam’s business has been taking off and, because of that, his priorities have come to a point of needing to focus more on his businesses.

I personally wanted to extend a public thank you to Sam for his hard work over the year, but he will not be going far as he is going to remain a veterans service office volunteer when he has time.

Congratulations to Sam and thank you for everything!
