Artists wanted for Back Roads tour

Are you an artist interested in being featured on the Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour? Now is your time to apply to be a featured artist.

From Jan. 1 through Feb. 4 all artists interested in applying for participation in the Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour are encouraged to apply online and submit their work for jury. Artists are welcome to apply including those who do not have a country studio. Some artists enjoy partnering with others for the month long tour that happens each October.

Participating artists involved with the tour open up their studios to visitors for the entire month. Artists work in their studios creating their art throughout the month and can offer their art for sale to visitors.

Healing Hearts hosts classes, activities

Healing Hearts and Memory Making, 173 S. Van Buren St., will host several classes and activities in the upcoming weeks.

A Mini Camp for 5 to 7-year-olds will happen Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. There will be a variety of activities from art to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) with structured activities and free choice time. Gyros in the Courtyard will provide a hot dog and a bag of chips for lunch. Water and fruit will be available. Admission is $35. If an older sibling would like to be a helper, the cost is $10. Space is limited to 12 children.

A wood memory box class will occur on Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. The box can hold four 3×3 photos, which can be printed during the class. The pictures will need to be sent by email or text. Admission is $25.

A Self-Care Junk Journal class will happen on Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. Attendees can create a journal to remind them of the importance of self-care. Tools and materials will be provided.

Couples Game Night will be on Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. Board, party and card games will be available. Snacks, water and coffee will be provided. Admission is $10.

Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out” making memories activities will happen on Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. Children ages 6 to 11 can make a memory book and a memory cube. “Today I Feel” projects and drawing prompts will also be available. Admission is $12.

A wood sign project class will occur on Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. Attendees can create a unique wooden sign. Tools and materials will be provided. Admission is $15.

An electricity science experiements class will happen of Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. Children ages 8 to 12 can build a bumbling bristle bot and a solar car, as well as other experiements. Admission is $10.

Adult Game Night will be on Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. Board, party, and card games will be available. Snacks, coffee, and water will be provided. Admission is $5.

An amazing earth science experiments class will occur on Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Experiments include capture a raindrop, candy rock, making craters, and melting poles. Admission is $10.

What’s Your Word – My Intent will happen on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. This class is meant to help find an inspirational word or phrase. Bracelets, ankle bracelets, and keychains can be made. Admission is $15.

Painting party at Big Woods

Big Woods Pizza, 44 N. Van Buren St., will host a painting party on Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Heather Maggard, of Heather’s Originals Art Co., will host the Snowy Night Painting Party where guests can paint a winter-themed canvas.

Those who arrive early can enjoy a pizza dinner. The party will begin with a complimentary cocktail.

The Art Connection tour announced

The Art Connection, a program for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and their caretakers, will start at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14 and end at 12:30 p.m.

The monthly program includes a tour of the House of the Singing Winds and T.C. Steele’s Large Studio. The studio is located at 4220 T.C. Steele Road.

Annual patron, youth exhibitions returns

The Brown County Art Guild welcomes painters of all ages to enter the annual patron and youth art shows this month.

Cash prizes will be awarded in the adult and youth categories.

Entries will be accepted Jan. 7 to 9 and 14 to 16. There is a two entry max for the patron art show. It is $40 for the first entry and $20 for the second. Youth are allowed one free entry.

Works will be judged by Guild artist member Jeff Hagen.

Artwork cannot have been previously shown at the Guild. All artwork must remain on display and be available for sale for the entire show, Jan. 22 to Feb. 19. A 40% contribution will be made to the Guild for any works sold. Any framed 2-D work in any medium except fine art photography will be considered.

An award ceremony and artist reception will happen on Feb. 19 beginning at 2 p.m.

Guild exhibitions displayed through February

Winter hours are Monday through Thursday, by appointment; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

New festival coming to Bill Monroe park

A new music festival is coming to Bill Monroe’s Music Park and Campground in June.

The Americana Bean Jamboree is scheduled for June 1 to 4 at the music park and campground, 5163 State Road 135 North. Grammy-nominated, all women-string band Della Mae, the Hogslop String Band and Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand are set to perform with more headliners to be announced in the next few weeks.

Music will range from country to blues.

Onsite camping is available with check in happening on June 1. There are over 250 electric and water campsites along with room for tent camping. Reservations are required for camping and are currently open. Every person entering the campground and festival is required to purchase an admission ticket. Children 12 and under are free.

Golf carts are currently available for rent for the full weekend.

Admission starts at $45.

Upcoming shows at Playhouse

With the ending of 2021 and the welcoming of 2022, the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., has announced several new shows and performances that will be on stage this year.

On Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m., Rainwater Studios will present their winter showcase with performances from The Rainwater 4, The Bengebrakers and The Long Seasons.

Regular admission is $18 and VIP tickets are $78. VIP tickets include backstage entry, food catered by the Ferguson House, an escort to reserved seating and a private after party with the band at the Ferguson House.

On Friday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m., the Playhouse will present the play “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney. The performance is a “tender, tragi-comic, and nuanced examination of the shared nostalgia, missed opportunities and deep closeness of two lifelong, complicated friends,” according to the Playhouse. Admission is $12.

On Friday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m., “Impromtu: A Capella Ensemble” will visit the Playhouse. The Indianapolis a capella group is compromised 0f five individuals. More information about their music is available at www.impromtusings.com/. Admission for that show is $32.50.

Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will present their Valentine’s Day Delexe concert on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. This Valentine’s Day show will feature music of Sinatra, Glenn Miller and American songbook favorites. Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is Indiana’s premier professional repertory large jazz ensemble, as well as the state’s official ambassadors of big jazz bands, according to the Playhouse. Admission is $32.50.

Composed of the leading professional instrumentalists and vocalists from the central Indiana area, the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra was created to preserve and advance the entire dynamic history of the big band. On Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m., the audience is invited to participate in “Arsenic and Old Lace: Live Retro Radio.” The play is “a farcical black comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower settlers, but now composed of maniacs, most of them homicidal,” according to the Playhouse. The show will also run on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. Admission is $12.

“Trial by Jury: An IU Gilbert and Sullivan Society Production” will visit the Playhouse on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Audiences can enjoy a laugh with light opera as Indiana University Gilbert and Sullivan Society presents “Trial by Jury” and a selection of other scenes performed by the students of the IU Jacobs School of Music. Admission for that performance is $18.

Founded in 1970, Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. A career retrospective recorded with the current lineup — and a few guests — carried the band back to the road, where they’ve remained a staple for five decades. Asleep at the Wheel will perform at the Playhouse on Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1970, Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. Inspired by Western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has accrued 10 Grammy awards. Admission is $55 to $75.
