Police blotter for week of Feb. 23

Columbus man leads police on chase

A Columbus man has been charged with a Level 6 felony for resisting law enforcement after a pursuit on Feb. 13.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Minor assisted Deputy Nicholson Briles at a traffic stop near Green Valley Motor Lodge on State Road 46 West.

According to the affidavit, Minor was advised to travel through the Brown County State Park north gate and exit the west gate to the scene.

Briles had stopped the driver, Jason Byrne, 42, Columbus, for a suspended license. Byrne was then to wait at the scene for a ride.

As Minor approached the west gate at 46 West, he could hear a vehicle coming up the hill by the entrance. As the vehicle passed he saw that it was the same vehicle Briles had advised to stop driving.

Minor attempted multiple times to initiate a traffic stop on 46 West, crossing over the Brown and Monroe county line.

Indiana State Police were advised of the situation and set up stop sticks at 46 West and King Road in Monroe County.

The stop sticks worked and popped a back tire on the vehicle, which slowed to 30 mph. At this time Byrne reportedly threw something out of the window.

Upon reaching a stop, Minor exited his patrol vehicle and drew his firearm, advising Byrne to exit the vehicle.

Byrne eventually opened the door, placed his hands in the air and “sprawled out on his stomach” on the ground, according to the affidavit.

As he was placed into handcuffs, Minor asked Byrne why he did not stop, to which he reportedly replied that he did not want to go to jail.

Byrne vomited in Minor’s patrol vehicle upon transport and told Minor he was a diabetic. He was booked into the Brown County jail.

He was formally charged on Feb. 14 with resisting law enforcement, Level 6 felony, and driving while suspended, Class A misdemeanor.
