Arvil ‘Hoot’ Burkhart Sr.

Arvil ‘Hoot’ Burkhart Sr., age 86 passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at Community Hospital South, in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Martinsville and former resident of Brown County.

Arvil was born Sept. 23, 1935, in Louellen, Kentucky to his parents Johnnie and Myrtle (Hammond) Burkhart. He proudly served his country with in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War. Arvil later married Mary K. Cornett on April 12, 1955 in Jellico, Tennessee and together they started a family. She survives after 66 loving years of marriage.

Arvil retired in April 1992 from Tool and Die at General Motors in Indianapolis after 33 years of service. He enjoyed horseback riding, raising Arabian Horses as well as trail riding and camping with his friends. Arvil loved spending time in the outdoors by gardening, looking for mushrooms and hunting rabbit, raccoon and deer. He had a knack for catching moles, was a supporter of Trump and will be remembered for his great storytelling. Most of all, Arvil loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren who call him Hooter and Pap.

He will be missed by his wife Mary of Martinsville; children, Deborah Johnston, Donna Burkhart and Sonya (Lyle) Wilson all of Martinsville; siblings, Jake Burkhart, Helen (Ray) Hammons, Phyllis Alexander all of London, Kentucky; grandchildren, Chastini (Jason) Davis, Rickie (Shelley) Lucas Jr., Jeremy Lucas, Jessica Eldridge, Robert (Jill) Burkhart, Brett (Bobbi) Burkhart, Ashley (Rick) Eddleman, Blake (Whitney) Wilson and Brittany Collings; and 23 great-grandchildren

Arvil was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Burkhart; mother, Myrtle Stillings; children, Diana Lynn Burkhart and Arvil Burkhart Jr., and siblings, Johnnie Burkhart, Judy Johnson and Geraldine Reed.

Pastor James Brown will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, March 28 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville with military rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and United States Marine Corp.
