Road closures, projects happening in county

Drivers will have to take a detour if trying to drive through Helmsburg on State Road 45 as the highway is closed for utility work until later this week.

The section of 45 is closed in both directions beginning at the intersection of the highway and North Railroad Road to Lick Creek Road as work continues on the stormwater project in Helmsburg.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation the section of highway is expected to be closed until the night of April 1.

A second road closure also started this week in Monroe County that could affect Brown County residents traveling into the county for the next two weeks.

North Shore Drive was set to be closed from March 28 through April 8 for a bridge replacement project.

A detour route uses Anderson Road to Old State Road 37 North to Robinson Road to Tunnel Road to South Shore Drive and then to State Road 45.

The bridge is over Wolf Creek on the west end of North Shore Drive, between Spillway Road and East Anderson Road.

Next week commutes could be impacted in the southern part of the county when construction begins on the bridge over Pleasant Valley Creek near Van Buren Elementary School on State Road 135 South.

Construction is expected to begin on, or after, April 4 and traffic on 135 South will be reduced to one lane. Temporary traffic signals will be used during the superstructure replacement project.

A similar project was completed last year on the bridge to the north on 135 South. The signals are expected to remain at the south bridge through early July, according to INDOT.

The $2 million contract was awarded to Milestone Contractors LP in September 2020. INDOT reminds drivers to use extra caution, avoid distractions, and consider worker safety when traveling through active construction zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.
