EAGLE CORNER: High school sports offer positive experience

By MARK BRUNER, guest columnist

Brown County High School has made a strong commitment to provide our athletes with quality coaching, athletic development and competitive schedules to give our athletes a positive high school athletic experience.

We offer 17 different varsity sports divided into three seasons: fall, winter and spring. With that we also offer an athletic experience for students of all levels.

BCHS is a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). We are governed by the association’s rules and regulations.

We are excited about our current direction. We have created an athletic development program (ADP) that focuses on building on an individual’s ability and developing an athlete. This program runs throughout the summer. The summer athletic development program will run from 10 a.m. to noon with a start date of Tuesday, May 31.

The program duration is Tuesday, May 31 to Thursday July 28. The normal schedule is Monday through Thursday of each week. The program will not run the week of July 4 due to the mandated IHSAA moratorium.

Along with ADP, BCHS students have created an athletic club called “The Way of the Eagle” that is striving to create a culture of school pride and school involvement for all students. This program is student created, student lead and student ran. Our purpose is to ensure a positive, competitive and winning culture for all Brown County athletes along with promoting engagement, involvement and pride within all extracurricular activities.

Our high school Athletic Booster Club is key to raising funds and keeping our athletes’ costs in uniforms and equipment at a minimum. We are in need of new officers for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.

The officers of the booster club have the following responsibilities:

President: presides at all meetings at which he/she is present and shall coordinate the work of the officers and committees of the organization. The president shall be a member ex officio of all committees.

Vice president: assists the president and shall perform the duties of the president in the absence of that officer.

Secretary: responsible for all the organization’s correspondence; records the minutes of all meetings of the organization; and keeps a record of all members.

Concessions coordinator: orders supplies that are needed for the operation of the concession stands at home events and for scheduling workers for these events.

Spirit coordinator: shares ideas to promote spirit.

Along with volunteers for the Booster Club we are always in need of help to run our athletic events. If you would like to volunteer to assist in some bigger events and get to see our athletes perform firsthand, please contact the high school athletics department. If you are interested in playing on a sports team or have any questions relating to the high school’s athletic programs, please contact me at 812-988-6606 or email [email protected].

Summer schedules will be coming out in the next few weeks. Families are highly encouraged to reach out to any coach to get any information you might need for your athlete:
