Club news for week of May 4

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 5. They will welcome Helmsburg Elementary School Principal Kelli Bruner who will discuss the Junior Achievement BizTown project.

The Junior Achievement BizTown project gives fifth-grade students the opportunity to learn about, apply for and then experience various occupations as citizens, consumers and workers in a simulated economy and society. The students learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, competitive markets and free enterprise, and basic economic concepts of banking, business and money management.

Junior Achievement provides a four week curriculum with the focus on financial literacy, community and economy, work and career readiness, and business management. The fifth-grade teachers teach this curriculum before going to Indianapolis to run BizTown. Students know their jobs before they attend through an interview process. Once at BizTown, the adults stand back and let the students run the town. There is a volunteer at every business to help when needed.

Bruner has been principal of Helmsburg Elementary for nearly 15 years. She earned a bachelor of science in education from Indiana University and a master of arts in education. She also received her administrator license from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Members of the community, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to the community, are invited to attend in person at The Seasons Lodge in the Fireplace Lounge, 560 State Road 46 East, or via Zoom using a link obtained by visiting www.RotaryClubofBrownCounty.org and clicking on the “Contact us” URL.
