Letters to the editor for week of June 15

‘They don’t own us or our assets’

To the editor:

This might not be for you, but I believe, and was taught, that Americans were to have a government that was self ruling. That is not the government we have.

No where was this more evident than in the Nashville Town Council meeting this past Monday, June 6.

Eight people showed up to voice their opposition to the actions of town council members. Four town council members — Nancy Crocker, Jane Gore, Tyra Miller and David Rudd — all acted in private to move forward with the privatizing Nashville’s publicly owned water utility. If it had not been for the commitment to the people by town council Vice President Anna Hofstetter the public would never had known.

The four council members disregarded the voices of the people and chose to correct their illegal act then move forward with the privatization of this public asset.

As Ronald Reagan stated the “government has no power except that granted it by the people.” Yet, the people showed up only to be ignored.

Do me a favor and remind Nancy Crocker, Jane Gore, Tyra Miller and David Rudd that we own this government. They don’t own us or our assets.

Library ‘gift’ to the community, keeps on giving

To the editor:

Friday May 27, 2022 was a very special day for the Brown County community. It was a day our neighbors gave back.

Through the efforts of many the library was “energized” and began producing electricity from the sun. The energy will not only power the building, but send excess energy back to Duke Energy‘s grid to be used by others.

Many generous donors made this happen. Here is the link to the library’s solar webpage: www.BrownCountyLibrary.info/solar

Through the efforts of the Friends of the Library (FOL) many other, perhaps smaller, successes happen throughout the year. You can be apart of those successes by joining or renewing a membership with the FOL. There are also opportunities to volunteer or serve on the FOL board.

Our library is an incredible gift the community gave to itself. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
