Letters to the editor for week of July 27

Expansion of CRC services will better community

To the editor:

As the former adult education coordinator for the Career Resource Center of Brown County (CRC), I really enjoyed reading recent articles showcasing the value of the work being done there.

Over the years, the CRC has proven to be an important resource in our community. Numerous CRC clients have bettered their lives through continuing education, certification classes and, of course, obtaining a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma.

As a result of those opportunities, many local families have improved their financial standing, people of all ages have learned marketable skills and many of our incarcerated neighbors have earned a fresh start to better their outlook on the future.

I am glad to know that the CRC is expanding their services, and I trust that our friends and neighbors will continue to benefit from all of the education and career opportunities available there.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Kabe, Brown County

Thanks to supporters for Successful film showing

To the editor:

On June 15, Brown County Schools (BCS) in partnership with the Brown County Recovery and Wellness Coalition (BCRAWC) presented a free showing of the film “LIKE,” a documentary about social media’s impact on our lives.

The audience was small, and mighty, engaging questions and discussion followed the film. Through grant funding, BCS and BCRAWC purchased the rights to this film along with an education package for use in schools and with youth and community groups.

We give a huge shoutout to the Brown County Playhouse for allowing free use of the theater and to the wonderful staff! The Playhouse also helped us to provide free refreshments. We could not have shown the film without their generosity and support.

Door prizes were awarded. Special thanks to the Chocolate Moose for offering a discount on gift cards and a huge shout out to the IGA. When asked to consider a discount on gift cards, the Brown County IGA donated two $25 gift cards. Yes, they gave us two $25 gift cards. And finally, thank you to the Brown County Democrat for writing and publishing an article about the film.

Find out more about the film at www.indieflix.com/like. We hope to see you at our next free showing on Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County High School Auditorium. All are invited and all are welcome. Free refreshments will follow the film and more door prizes will be awarded!

Thanks for jail program, help for county inmates

To the editor:

On behalf of the inmates of the Brown County jail, I want to take this opportunity to write this letter and give a special thanks to the REC program.

For those who don’t know, REC stands for Residents Encounter Christ. These men who came in to share some of their stories have been sitting right where we are. Through perseverance, and dedication to live their lives in the service of Christ, they have broken the chains of addiction. They have, and are continuing to, overcome many of the obstacles in their lives, bringing the message of hope to people who are where they have been. It gives us all hope that change is obtainable.

The Bible says to put on Christ, and I can say that each and every person who was involved in this program truly are as Christlike as I have ever seen in my life. They are truly changing lives. They said many times not to say “thank you” for anything they brought or said, so we all thank Jesus for each and everyone involved, starting with the men who came and shared their stories, not leaving out the churches and each person in our community who donated their time, money and sincere prayers.

We all are truly blessed to have been able to participate and be a part of the program and feel the love of Christ they all shared to each every one of us. I’m a firm believer that we should strive to be as much like these men and women, and make it a daily dedication to be more like Christ.

Last but by far not least, I would like to thank Sheriff Scott Sutherland and Chief Deputy Brad Stogsdill for allowing this to happen.

Even though I myself have personally been on the other end of the law, they both have always treated me with the upmost respect in spite of my offenses. We as a community are blessed to have examples from them because although they are firm and professional. They are also compassionate and truly deserve to be where they are in their careers.

In closing I just want to say to my community, and anyone I’ve ever deprived or hurt in my past, I hope to one day be able to follow the examples of the people from the program, and one day be able to come back and set an example myself. Thanks again on behalf of the inmates in the Brown County jail for bringing us the message of hope and showering us with love and for the time, prayers and dedication they have for humanity. Furthermore, I would like to thank Kenny Moore for his kindness and compassion.
