Upcoming events at the library

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will host several events in October for all ages.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m., “Healthy Habits for Healthy Kids,” Kids can try new foods, experience new flavors and learn about healthy snacks. Class size is limited to 10. For kids ages 6 to 12.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m., “Eat Smart Live Strong: Munch and Learn,” Sample food, take home healthy recipes and learn tips for healthy eating. Class size limited to 10.
  • Monday, Oct. 31, 10:30 a.m., Monday Morning Storytime, stories, songs, rhymes and crafts will be available for kids ages 0 to 6.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m., “The Science of Frankenstein with Professor Steve,” join Professor Steve for a spooky story and some fun science. All ages are welcome.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 26, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., ATLAS: At the Library after School, games, crafts and snacks will be available for kids and teens grades 6 to 12.
  • Wednesdays, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9 and 16, book bike will visit the Courthouse at 1:45 p.m., Willow Manor at 2:15 p.m. and Hawthorne Hills at 2:30 p.m. Holds can be placed from the website (BrownCountyLibrary.info/catalog) by selecting “Book Bike” as the location or by calling the Library at 812-988-2850.
  • Thursday, Oct. 27, 10:30 a.m., “Child’s First Teacher,” parents and caregivers will learn the “why” behind being their child’s first and most important teacher. Presented by Amy Marine, Family Engagement Specialist with Chances and Services for Youth.
  • Friday, Oct. 28 through Tuesday, Nov. 1, “Trick or tREAD at the Library.” Kids can earn treats by doing the Halloween obstacle course and reading Halloween books.
  • Friday, Oct. 28, 1 to 2 p.m., Homeschool Huddle, activities for kids and networking for adults. Open to all Brown County homeschoolers.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2:30 to 5 p.m., Fall Crafts at Cordry-Sweetwater, leaf themed fall crafts will be available for adults and kids. All tools and materials supplied. All ages welcome.
  • Thursday, Nov. 3 and Dec. 8, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Game 4 a Change, board, card, and interactive games for ages 12 and up will be available to play. Guests are also invited to bring their own games.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 9, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Open Play and Family Literacy, family literacy tips from Miss Samantha and open play time for kids ages 0 to 6.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16, 6 p.m., “Generous Listening,” learn techniques to become a better listener with facilitator Beth Schroeder.
  • Saturday, Nov. 19, 2 to 3 p.m., “Nature Writing Mini Workshop with Michele Pollock,” exploration of the library and grounds, followed by a writing opportunity led by Brown County author and artist Michele Pollock.

Antique machinery swap meet slated

The Brown County Antique Machinery Association will have their Fall Swap Meet on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brown County Fairgrounds, 802 Memorial Drive.

There is a $20 set-up fee for vendors.

Free legal aid phone clinic set next week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 1 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on Tuesday, Nov. 1, between noon and 2 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

AGLOW meeting planned next month

Women’s AGLOW will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at the chapel at Cornerstone Inn, 54 E. Franklin St.

Pancake breakfast set at middle school

Brown County Middle School PTO will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the middle school, 95 Schoolhouse Lane.

Pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee, milk and pancake toppings will be served. The cost is $7 per person or $25 for a family of four or more. Kids age 3 and under are free.

All proceeds will go back to the student activities fund.

Women’s wine night scheduled Nov. 10

WestPoint Financial Group, Mary Kay and NeoLife will host Women’s Wine Night at Country Heritage Winery, 225 S. Van Buren St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The topic will be “Empowering Women with a Holistic Wellness.”

Skye Nicholson from Soul’s Truth Empowerment Coaching, Beth Drew from Mary Kay, Allison Braden from NeoLife and Clara Stanley from WestPoint Financial Group will be featured as guest speakers.

The event in co-sponsored by BlossomSweets on Etsy, Salt Creek Golf Retreat, Johnny’s Grub To Go and Jennie Root Photography.

Food and drinks are free but six wine samples will be available for $5 from Country Heritage Winery.

Purdue Extension annual meeting

Purdue Extension – Brown County will hold its annual meeting and dinner on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Exhibit Building at the Brown County Fairgrounds, 802 Memorial Drive.

All are welcome to join for a free dinner and a presentation from Peaceful Valley Heritage. The Extension Board and Extension Educator will also share updates of Purdue Extension’s work in Brown County and present several service awards.

Thanksgiving dinner back to high school

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner will return to the Brown County High School this year, 235 Schoolhouse Lane, on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The dinner is free to the community and guests must RSVP in advance.

Turkeys are needed at this point in time. All are welcome to donate turkeys at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St.

Become a foster grandparent

Thrive Alliance and AmeriCorps Seniors are currently looking for foster grandparents for children.

Thrive Alliance and AmeriCorps Seniors work with public and faith-based schools, Head Start Centers and youth serving facilities in five counties, including Brown, being role models, mentors, tutors and friends.

Bible studies ongoing in county

The study on biblical discipleship that inspired Fertile Ground Ranch Discipleship Ministry (FGR) will be taught on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The study will be led by Bill Schlipp, FGR founder. The group will meet at the FGR farmhouse on the east side of Brown County. Bring a Bible and a notebook. A study guide will be provided.

They will study Job 1 and 2, Peter, Colossians and James.

LEAP applications available now

Applications are currently open for the 2022-2023 Brown County Leadership Education Adventure Program (LEAP) cohort. The program will begin in October 2022 and continue through April 2023.

LEAP develops leadership skills, creates a network for the study of community issues and allows participants to learn the needs of the Brown County community.

Applications can be picked up at the Career Resource Center, the Brown County Music Center or the Brown County Visitors Center.

Project Lifesaver applications open

TRIAD and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department have announced that applications are now open for Project Lifesaver.

Those with loved ones at risk of wandering would obtain a personalized wrist-watch sized radio transmitter fitted to their wrist that would be used to locate them if they go missing.

This program is available to any Brown County resident due to a grant support from the Brown County Community Foundation and its partners.

Grants available for septic, well repairs

The Great Lakes Community Action Partnership Decentralized Water Systems program recently announced the availability of grants for water well, in-home water treatment and septic system repairs.

The maximum loan amount is $15,000 with a 1% interest rate. The maturity may not exceed 20 years and will depend on repayment ability.

To be eligible for the grant, the applicant’s household income cannot exceed $33,470.

In addition, applicants must own and occupy the home or be in the process of purchasing the home for occupancy. New home construction and community water systems are not eligible.

Nashville Farmers Market continues

The Nashville Farmer’s Market will continue through Oct. 30.

The market runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday in the parking lot of the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East. Parking is free. The market is the place to shop local and support local growers, bakers and makers.

Each week market vendors offer an ever-changing selection of plants from local gardens, seasonal produce, breads and baked goods, pastured meats and eggs, arts and more. Live music will also be performed.

SNAP shoppers can have their benefits doubled at the market information tent. All shoppers can enter to win the market’s weekly $10 raffle. The market is a rain or shine event.

Seasons holiday show

The Seasons Holiday Art and Craft Show is planned for Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seasons Event Center, 506 State Road 46 East.

The annual show began almost 40 years ago. This year’s show will showcase 30 artists and crafters from local and regional studios.

Breakfast, brunch and lunch prepared by the Seasons staff will be available.
