ART BRIEFS: Local artist to be featured in quilt show; Playhouse featuring shows

Local artist featured in quilt show

BLOOMINGTON — Local artist Peggy Brown has been invited to be the featured artist for the 30th annual Indiana Heritage Quilt show. Brown will be present at the show on Thursday and Friday, March 2 and 3 at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. in Bloomington, to do short demonstrations, answer questions and visit with visitors.

Brown has exhibited her fiber art quilts internationally winning many awards. More than 15 large pieces of her work created using her unique fabrics painted with watercolor will be on display.

On display will be special International Exhibits; a Quilt Challenge show; and an open juried exhibit with $10,000 in prize money. Also five national quilting instructors will conduct workshops. For more information, directions and hours; or to register for a workshop go to www.IHQS.org.

Multiple shows at the playhouse this weekend

The Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., will welcome numerous acts in its upcoming season.

Dogs of Society: An Elton John Tribute will be Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.

The Dogs will take audiences on a ride through a rock catalog of the 1970s with Elton John’s hits like Bennie and the Jets, Tiny Dancer and Crocodile Rock to deeper cuts like Funeral for a Friend, Madman Across the Water, and many more. No tracks. No tricks. Just a rock band delivering a dynamic, performance.

The playhouse and Brown County Real Estate will present Pat Godwin on Friday, March 10. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35.

Godwin was featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2009. Because he has such strong material and highly developed improvisational skills, no two shows are ever the same. Godwin’s comedy has an edge to it, with a mix of quirky, personal musings and off-the-cuff remarks. Godwin can segue into any one of his songs, performed in an endless array of musical styles.

On Saturday, March 11, Parrots of the Caribbean;The music of Jimmy Buffett, will start at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.

The show is a high-energy, original show putting the ROCK in Trop-Rock, featuring a salute to Jimmy Buffett, along with fan-favorite originals, stage-show antics. The show is acclaimed as the No. 1 Jimmy Buffett Tribute.

Woomblies Rock Orchestra will be Saturday, March 18. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

The Woomblies Rock Orchestra is a powerhouse of talent. Eleven musicians, including a four-piece string section, and two horns, playing some of the greatest Rock and Motown music ever written. Music from Rock bands like ELO, Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin and greats like Al Greene and The Four Tops.

Upcoming events at the Brown County Music Center

The Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Boulevard, will welcome a variety of acts to the stage.

Blue October will perform Wednesday, March 8 at 8 p.m.

The platinum-certified alternative quartet from San Marcos, TX features Justin Furstenfeld on vocals, guitar, songwriter, Jeremy Furstenfeld on drums, Ryan Delahoussaye on violin, mandolin, piano, and Matt Noveskey on bass. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will be Saturday, March 11. The show starts at 8 p.m.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in Country Rock and American Roots Music, continues to add to their legendary status.
