Club news for week of March 7

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet on Thursday, March 9 at 7:45 a.m. at The Seasons Lodge in the Fireplace Lounge, 560 State Road 46 East.

The guest speaker will be Jim Eagleman, recently retired naturalist with the DNR.

He will speak on his forty-year career, most of which was spent at the Brown County State Park, as well as some of his post-retirement activities.

Eagleman loves observing nature and teaching people about it while employing his sense of humor. He grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country and moved to Urbana when his father accepted a position with the University of Illinois’ School of Veterinary Medicine.

Eagleman earned a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science at Western Illinois University and then a master’s degree in Botany from DePauw while working full time at Turkey Run State Park. He moved to Brown County when the Naturalist position opened in 1978. In 2017, he was honored by the Sassafras Audubon Society with its Lifetime Conservation Award.

Eagleman and his wife Kay enjoy kayaking and hiking the many natural areas, preserves and land trust sites in Brown and neighboring counties. They have three sons, all graduates of Brown County High School. Jim’s “Field Notes” have appeared in Our Brown County for several years.

Members of the community, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to our community, are invited to attend.
