BCHS jazz band and winter guard perform on same day, earn high marks

The Brown County winter guard and jazz band were rewarded for their hard work earlier this month, in two events that took place on the same day.

Some students were even involved in both groups, requiring them to prepare for and then perform in two different ways at two different places just hours apart.

On March 4, the winter guard had their final performance of the season at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association (IHSCGA) State Prelims at Hamilton Southeastern High School, and the jazz band performed at the Jazz Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Festival at Whiteland Community High School.

According to Director of Bands Matthew Finley, the winter guard received their all-time best score, 60.33, at IHSCGA state prelims.

“They were looking good and just gave an awesome performance,” he said in an email last week.

The students in Brown County High School winter guard includes seniors Ava Clarke, Tori Klaker, Zack Reed, Naje Bedja, Dylan Taylor, Henry Himebaugh, Alyson Pennington and Katarina Laguna; junior Ely Wesley; freshmen Alex Foster, Dagan Clarke and Oscar Harlow; and eighth graders Mariah Naylor, Hailey Naylor, Izabelle Phillips, Kamrin Surface, Lilly Tryon and Theo King.

At the ISSMA Jazz Festival, the jazz band competed in Group II.

“They received a rating of silver, and put on a great performance,” Finley said

BCHS students in jazz band include: Katarina Laguna, Ely Wesley, Zack Reed, Lily Haza, Oscar Harlow, Owen East, Jayce Riggle, Levi Phillips, Naje Bedja, Henry Himebaugh, Alayna Jacobus, Dylan Taylor, Cadence Cox and Joey Denison.

Finley said both groups were looking forward to performing for Brown County Middle School on March 10, before students set out for Spring Break.
