Club news for week of April 4

Rotary club

Brown County Rotary Club will meet Thursday, April 6 at 7:45 a.m. at The Seasons Lodge in the Fireplace Lounge, 560 State Road 46 East.

Brown County Democrat Editor Abigail Youmans will be the guest speaker. She will share the history of the Democrat, the travails of producing an award-winning small-town newspaper with a skeleton staff, and her plans for the future of the newspaper, guided by a Post-It note on her desk that states “We are here to help spread the truth.”

Youmans is a native of Brown County, grew up on Clay Lick Road where she was home-schooled, met her future husband in Sunday School, and has worked in the county since the age of 14.

She began working for the Brown County Democrat in the spring of 2019, as she was finishing her junior year in college, has sat at three desks in the newsroom and in four roles and was appointed editor in September of last year.

She earned a bachelor of arts in English with a concentration in creative writing from Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus. She and her husband, Scott, an EMT with IU Health LifeLine, live just north of Nashville.

Members of the community, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to our community, are invited to attend.
