Hickory Ridge Community Center

April showers have come and gone, and May is in full bloom. The Community Center’s activity has increased, and we will have a lot going on this year!

So here is what we have going on in May at the Center:

5/10, 12pm-3pm: Volunteer opportunity, we will be doing our month deep cleaning of the center. Call Kevin Patrick @ 765-346-4642 or email [email protected] if you would like to help.

5/16, 10am-2pm: The Brown County Health Department nurse will visit for a health check. After that there will be a potluck, a few hands of cards, and a walk around the track.

5/18, 8am-11am: Monthly fundraiser breakfast at the center, $6 adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Donations help keep us going and are very appreciated! Primary or general election candidates are more than welcome to join us and engage with the community at our breakfast.

5/20, 6pm-8pm: Hamblen Township Civic League board meeting. Feel free to join us!

5/23, 10am-2pm: The Seniors will have a potluck, play some cards, and work a few puzzles.

5/30, 10am-2pm: Seniors will have a potluck, and play some cards at the center.

We want to thank all those supporters of our breakfast and Live music/Food fundraisers, we truly appreciate all of your support!

When the center isn’t rented for an event, the playgrounds, walking track, and horseshoe pits (bring your own shoes) are available for use by the community. Morning Storytime, Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 28 · 10:30 am, Stories, songs, rhymes and movement for kids under 6.

LEGO Club, Saturday, May 18 · 1-2:30 pm, Drop in and show off your LEGO skills and collaborate with other LEGO builders.

Kids’ Group Ukulele Class, Thursday, May 23 · 1-2 pm, Kids ages For ages 6-11 will learn the basics of playing the ukulele with instructors from Weed Patch Music. Maximum class size 12 kids. Registration required.

Pre-K Days: Words and Wiggles, Friday, May 31 · 10:30 am, Creative movement and dance followed by open play time. For kids under 6. Registration requested.

For Families

WonderLab presents Bright Science, Saturday, May 25 · 1 pm, Explore LIGHT… the energy we can see! Discover what light is made of and the science behind the surprising ways it’s generated. Featuring brightly colored flames, cool glowing liquids, bizarre fluorescent materials and other surprises! All ages welcome. Registration requested.

Family Movie Night at the Library, Thursday, May 30 · 5-7 pm, Come to the Library to vote for your favorite movie and see which one wins! Visit the bulletin board in the children’s area to see all of the movie candidates. The winner will be shown at Family Movie Night. Everyone is welcome. No registration required.

ATLAS (At the Library After School), Wednesday, May 15 & 22 · 3:15 – 5 p.m., Hang time, games, crafts and snacks for kids and teens in grade 6-12.

Genealogy Basics, Saturday, May 18 · 1-3 p.m., Kathy with a “K” is back! Join genealogist Kathy Evans and learn how and what to look for before you start your genealogy search. Learn about vital records, census records, how to decipher names and more., Registration required. Class may be cancelled if minimum registration of 5 participants is not met.

Beginner’s Guide to Canva, Tuesday, May 21 · 5:30 pm, Learn to use Canva — a cloud-based graphic design program that you can use for free to create quality graphics for online and print. Canva is a great tool for non-profits and small businesses. Participants can bring their own laptop or tablet and work along. A limited number of laptops and iPads will be available for participants to use on a first come, first served basis. Participants will need to create their own Canva account to work along. Registration requested

BCPL Craft Club: Decorative “Book” Boxes, Wednesday, May 29 · 6 pm, Create your own book-shaped boxes, perfect for storing small treasures or as gift boxes. All tools and materials supplied.

For adults and teens 13 +. Registration requested.

Tech Help Thursdays, Thursdays · 2-3 p.m., Drop in for basic help with your electronic devices. Get answers to your phone, tablet and computer questions, help installing and connecting to Library apps and basic software assistance. No appointment required, just ask at the check out desk.

Book Bike Deliveries

Weekly in-town stops for library book delivery and returns. Meet the Book Bike at one of our outdoor locations to pick up items placed on hold, return your library books, pick up program schedules or get a library card.

How it works:

Place items on hold through your account on the Library website by noon Monday

Select “Book Bike” as the pickup location

Meet the Book Bike on Tuesdays at one of the outdoor stops

Holiday Closures

The Library will be closed Monday, May 27 for Memorial Day.

The Brown County History Center and Pioneer Village

The Pioneer Village is open for the summer/fall season. The village will be open 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tours can be arranged upon request. Call the B.C. History center at 812-988-2899 to make arrangements. The Village is maintained by donations. Come and visit the past.

The History Center is open Tuesdays. Wednesdays. Fridays and Saturdays. 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come see all things “Brown County”.

The Archives are open on Tuesdays and Fridays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Special times may be arranged by calling the History Center at 812-988-2899.

The Brown County History Center will host the “Spring in to Arts and Craft” show on May 11th. from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. Local artists will be selling their art. Here is a chance to find that one of a kind “Mother’s Day” gift.

BC Cemetery Preservation Society

BC Cemetery Preservation Society is seeking your help to honor those children and babies who passed before us. Help us by adopting a lamb at $10 or an angel at $20 or $30. The 2024 Brown County 4-H Fair will be June 9–June 15.

Lions Club 4th of July Fireworks 2024

The Lions Club fireworks in Brown County, Indiana will be held on the evening of Saturday, July 6.
