Hickory Ridge Community Center
Summer is right around the corner and June is here. The Community Center’s activity has increased, and we will have a lot going on this year!
So here is what we have going on in June at the Center:
6/20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: The Brown County Health Department nurse will visit for a health check. After that there will be a potluck and a few hands of cards.
6/24, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.: Hamblen Township Civic League board meeting. Feel free to join us!
6/27, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: The Seniors will have a potluck, play some cards, and take a walk around the track.
We want to thank all those supporters of our breakfast and Live music/Food fundraisers, we truly appreciate all your support!
When the center isn’t rented for an event, the playgrounds, walking track, and horseshoe pits (bring your own shoes) are available for use by the community. Library’s Summer Reading Program
The Brown County Public Library is excited to announce the 2024 Summer Reading Program, Adventure Begins at Your Library! This program will run from June 1 through July 20.
Staying connected with books and reading over the summer is a proven way to avoid the summer slide of academic skills over the break. Readers of all ages are invited to participate by logging their reading and attending library programs to earn incentives and chances to win prizes.
Each week will feature a different adventure theme — travel, close to home, nature, imagination, mysteries and puzzles, and in the dark — with programs and activities to match. Some of the reading adventures planned for this year include a “Lil’s Summer Reading Program” especially for ages 0-4, a visit from Smokey Bear, intergenerational craft programs like journal making and embroidery, movie nights and author visits. The library is partnering with local businesses, Brown County State Park, Brown County Soil & Water, and local Scout leaders for exciting new programs. As always, our Summer Reading programs are free for everyone to attend, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Library.
We encourage everyone — littles, kids, teens and adults — to join in the Summer Reading fun. Registration begins June 1 and participants can sign up at both the Main Library in Nashville and the Cordry Sweetwater Branch, or on our website at browncountylibrary.info/srp24. Check out our online events calendar for all of the programs planned for this summer.
Summer Reading 2024 also coincides with a new free snacks program at Brown County Public Library, in partnership with Brown County Schools. Free snacks will be available to anyone under age 18 starting June 4. Snack times are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. and 3-4 p.m., and must be eaten at the library.

Drop in for special summer stories, songs, rhymes and movement with Miss Samantha, then stay and play after story time! For ages 0-4 with their caregivers.
Library Olympics
Thursday, June 20 · 1 -3 p.m.
Bring your library and reading skills to the Olympic fields! Compete for a medal in book stacking, alphabetizing, book balancing, and other learning sports. For ages 5-12. Registration requested.
For Kids and Teens
Free Summer Snacks at the Library, Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 20, 24 & 27 · 10-11 a.m. and 3-4 p.m., Free snacks will be available to anyone under age 18. Snacks must be eaten at the library. In partnership with Brown County Schools.
Geodes of Brown County
Thursday, June 27 · 2 -3 p.m.
Learn to safely open a geode. Geodes provided or bring your own. Bring gloves to protect your hands. For ages 9-15. Space is limited to 11 — registration required.

International Movie Night: This Beautiful Fantastic, Thursday, June 20 · 5:30 p.m., Set in London, this is a sweet story about a reclusive young woman who finds an unlikely mentor in the rich curmudgeon who lives next door. British refreshments will be served.
BCPL Craft Club: Memory Wire Bracelets, Wednesday, June 26 · 6 p.m., Enjoy a relaxing evening stringing beads and leave with a multi-strand bracelet. All tools and materials supplied. For adults and teens 13 and older. Registration requested.

Summer Reading Program: Adventure begins at your library! June 1 – July 20, Open to readers of all ages, from birth to adult, the summer reading program offers incentives and the chance to win prizes for tracking your reading. Register in person at either library branch or online beginning June 1.
Tech Help Thursdays, Thursdays · 2 -3 p.m., Drop in for basic help with your electronic devices. Get answers to your phone, tablet and computer questions, help installing and connecting to Library apps and basic software assistance. No appointment required, just ask at the check out desk.

Book Bike Deliveries

Weekly in-town stops for library book delivery and returns. Meet the Book Bike at one of our outdoor locations to pick up items placed on hold, return your library books, pick up program schedules or get a library card.

Holiday Closures
The Library will be closed Wednesday, June 19 for Juneteenth.
The Brown County History Center and Pioneer Village
The Pioneer Village is open for the summer/fall season. The village will be open 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tours can be arranged upon request. Call the B.C. History center at 812-988-2899 to make arrangements. The Village is maintained by donations. Come and visit the past.
The History Center is open Tuesdays. Wednesdays. Fridays and Saturdays. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come see all things “Brown County”.
The Archives are open on Tuesdays and Fridays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Special times may be arranged by calling the History Center at (812) 988-2899.
BC Cemetery Preservation Society
The Cemetery Society is planning workdays in our cemeteries for the second Saturday of each month for this year. We welcome anyone to come help. We have lost touch with the past cemetery caretakers and are looking for any information on anyone who has taken over. Keep in touch with our group’s activities on our Facebook page: BC Cemetery Preservation Society or call us at 812-320-6237. We also have meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at the History Center on 90 E. Gould Street at 4:00 p.m. Visitors and interested volunteers are welcome.
BC Cemetery Preservation Society is seeking your help to honor those children and babies who passed before us. Help us by adopting a lamb at $10 or an angel at $20 or $30. Lions Club 4th of July Fireworks 2024
Brown County Lions Independence Day Fireworks to light up the sky over Nashville, Saturday, July 6
The “Greatest Small Town Independence Day Fireworks in America” will explode over Nashville on Saturday, July 6. The Brown County Lions have put on the display to honor America each year for over 50 years, and are excited to do it again this year.
“The Independence Day fireworks are always the highlight of the summer. Everyone gets to spend the evening with all their friends and neighbors,” said Lion Fireworks Chair Jim Oliver. The fireworks will fly “when it is good and dark,” says Oliver. As always, the best views of the fireworks are on the hill west of the high school football field.
The Scouts of Troop 190 will sell food and glow bracelets to earn money to pay for summer camp.
The fireworks are paid for by small business donations and with money collected by Lions members wandering through the crowd.

Brown County Health Department Back-To-School Vaccine Clinic
We will be at the Brown County High School Registration Days on July 31 and Aug. 1. We will also have a Saturday Clinic at the Health Department on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Beat the rush and get your students vaccinated for the coming school year. The Brown County Health Department Nursing Division vaccinates those without insurance and those on Medicaid and private insurance.

Unity Baptist Church Cemetary Association annual meeting
The Unity Baptist Church Cemetery Association annual meeting which is usually held the second Sunday in June has been postponed until Sunday, June 30 at 1 p.m. at the church.
CVB Monthly Meeting Location
The standing location of the monthly CVB meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. will no longer be in the upstairs conference room at the Visitors Center, it will instead be in the downstairs meeting room of the Cornerstone Inn, unless otherwise announced.
