Sugar Shack enjoying sweet taste of success

Brown County Sugar Shack has officially been open for over a month.

The Nashville coffee shop (51 Chestnut St E, Suite F) opened its doors on June 22. They are open Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m..

“It’s been very steady, very local headed,” General Manager Alisa Smith said. “We’re very lucky, locals have kept us going.”

Smith manages the shop owned by her parents Rachelle and Michael Smith who are both Brown County natives.

“My parents have always wanted a little piece of Nashville,” Smith said. “They always dreamed of having a shop or a coffee shop in town. Around 10 years ago my dad started producing maple syrup. The idea of the sugar shack started with the idea of combining maple syrup with a coffee shop.”

The name for the Mike’s maple, a latte with 100% pure maple syrup sourced from Indiana suppliers, was coined from that idea.

“It’s important to my parents that people know we have strong ties to New Life church, this shop was also made as a place of ministry,” Smith said. “They wanted to spread the word of Jesus and create a place of fellowship where people can come to relax.”

Smith said that a leading idea that always came up when they thought of opening the coffee shop was to have an affordable option in town for people to gather and relax.

“We have people walk over from Willow and Hawthorne,” said Smith. “We wanted to make sure locals could have somewhere they could park, come in and not have to pay an arm and a leg for coffee.”

The Brown County Sugar Shack offers a cup of coffee for $2 served in a mug with free refills for customers who prefer drip coffee. They also serve lattes, macchiatos, teas, non caffeinated drinks and pastries.

Smith said that she has worked in Brown County on and off for around 12 years at restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

“Customer service is my passion,” said Smith. “I have helped open businesses in other cities and enjoyed being there from the ground up. Being able to help them with this dream of theirs has been very special.”

Although Brown County Sugar Shack has been open for a month, they are still looking for part-time baristas who are 18 and older. Interested parties can contact the Sugar Shack at [email protected] or by phone at (812) 988-8576.
