Paving projects nearing finish

Brown County has been lit up in recent months with orange. But rather than the changing of the leaves this pop of color comes in the form of traffic cones and safety vests.

Hang on a little longer because fall brings a light at the end of the tunnel with completed construction dates starting this month and running through October.

The Brown County Highway Department’s crew has successfully paved Gatesville, Bear Creek, Beech Tree and Sprunica roads.

Brown County Highway Department Office Manager Sandra Pool said that they are currently mowing, grating and patchworking roads in northern and southern parts of the county. These procedures do not result in road closures.

Nashville Town Manager Sandie Jones told the Democrat that the Indiana Department of Transportation’s construction downtown on the Main and Van Buren streets traffic lights has been completed.

The traditional intersection was replaced with an exclusive pedestrian phase intersection, which temporarily stops traffic from all directions to allow pedestrians to cross an intersection in any direction at the same time with no vehicular movement around them.

It is imperative that people push the walk button on the signs by each intersection and wait until they see the walking symbol. This also allows traffic to turn without having to wait for pedestrians to cross the street.

Jones said right now there is no other construction going on in the town of Nashville that she can provide updates on.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is currently installing a traffic light on State Road 46 at the entrance of the Brown County State Park. According to a news release, construction taking place at the intersection of State Road 46 at the state park entrance and Old State Road 46 is expected to be wrapped up by mid-September, weather permitting.

“No full closures will take place on State Road 46 for this project, only single lane closures,” said INDOT Southeast Public Relations Director Sidney Nierman.

The lane restrictions over Pleasant Valley Creek near Stonehead that have been in place since May are expected to remain until late October. The department of transportation has been completing this structure replacement causing them to reduce State Road 135 to one lane.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has also been completing a bridge deck overlay project on State Road 46 near Gnaw Bone Creek since April. Alternating lane closures have taken place near the state roads 135 and 46 intersection and are expected to remain until the end of the month.
