Letter: Even for Republicans, Harris is better choice

Who do our national leaders endorse for president of the United States? They are respected individuals who are directly involved in day-to-day operation of our great country. Recently, more than 700 national security leaders signed a letter from the NSL4A (National Security Leaders for America) endorsing Kamala Harris for President. The list of signees included 15 four-star generals, 10 former Cabinet secretaries and 10 service secretaries. Security leaders acknowledged that they do not agree with Harris on every policy, but they all believe America’s national security requires a serious and capable commander-in-chief.

On Sept. 30, the New York Times editorial board wrote, Kamala Harris is “The only patriotic choice for president”. Adding, “As a dedicated public servant who has demonstrated care, competence and an unwavering commitment to the Constitution, Ms. Harris stands alone in this race.” In condemnation of Donald Trump, the board added, “It is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump.”

It is noteworthy that no former president has endorsed Trump while many Republicans have endorsed Harris. In an open letter entitled “Republican Former National Security Leaders Statement of Support for Vice President Harris,” 111 signatories write “We are former national security and foreign policy officials who served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George. H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and/or Donald Trump, or as Republican Members of Congress. We expect to disagree with Kamala Harris on many domestic and foreign policy issues, but we believe that she possesses the essential qualities to serve as President and Donald Trump does not. We firmly oppose the election of Donald Trump”.

In a similar letter, more than 200 former staffers for Republican administrations endorsed Kamala Harris, cautioning that the notion of a second term for GOP nominee Donald Trump “is simply untenable” and “will hurt real, everyday people”.

A short list of other notable Republicans who have come forward to endorse Kamala Harris include Dick Cheney, vice president under G.W. Bush; Liz Cheney, former representative from Wyoming; Anthony Scaramucci, former communication director for Trump; Rep. Adam Kinzinger from Illinois; Alberto Gonzales, attorney General under G.W. Bush; and Geoff Duncan, former Lt. Governor of Georgia.

Many Republicans who are in the unique position of understanding the perils of the choice ahead, have chosen “country over party” and are supporting Kamala Harris for President. Kamala Harris is the only choice.
