Fall-O-Ween Party 2024

Brown County Parks and Recreation’s 2024 Fall-O-Ween Party at Deer Run Park will be Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This is a free event for all ages featuring face painting, bounce house, food, drinks, popcorn, weenie roast, and much more. Friendly Forest at Jackson Township

Friendly Forest offers a safe and free trick-or-treat experience for children and adults 7-9 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, and the following Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, at the Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road. The department bills the event as “Cute enough for toddlers, friendly enough for all ages.”

Costumes are encouraged, and music, hot dogs, popcorn and hot chocolate will be provided along with a lighted trail. For more information, visit the Facebook page for Jackson Township Fire Department #5.

Annual Studio Tour through Oct. 31

The 26th annual Brown County Studio Tour runs through Oct. 31. This is a self-guided tour of working artists’ studios throughout Brown County. Enjoy Brown County’s scenic backroads as you travel to different locations where you will have the unique opportunity to meet the artists, tour their studios and purchase directly from them.

All studios are open Wednesday through Saturday, with some also open on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, including a list of featured artists and studios and a map that can be downloaded or printed, visit bcstudiotour.com.

Brown County Democrat hosting first Nashville ghost walk

Reporter Dakota Bruton will lead the first-ever Brown County Haunted History Tour through downtown Nashville on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., sharing spooky stories and historical tales of Brown County.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Democrat office, 153 E. Main St. Tickets are $13 or $20 for two. Space is limited and tickets are selling fast, so get yours before it’s too late … if you dare!

Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. The walk will last around an hour, rain or shine.

Hickory Ridge Community Center plans events

October sees cooler temperatures, a splash of color and the beginning of the holiday season. Here is what’s on the calendar for Hickory Ridge Community Center:

Oct. 19, 8-11 a.m.: Monthly fundraiser breakfast at the center, $6 adults and $3 for children 12 and under. This will be the last breakfast for the year. As always, donations help keep the center going and are very appreciated!

Oct. 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: A senior day with a potluck, working some puzzles, and a few hands of cards.

Oct. 28, 6-8 p.m.: Hamblen Township Civic League Board Meeting. Guests welcome.

Oct. 31, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: A senior day with a potluck and a few hands of cards.

The center wants to thank supporters of our breakfast and live music/food fundraisers.

When the center isn’t rented for an event, the playgrounds, walking track, and horseshoe pits (bring your own shoes) are available for use by the community. Morning Storytime, 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 22 & 29, Stories, songs, rhymes and crafts for kids under 6 with their caregivers.

LEGO Club, 5- 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, drop in and show off your LEGO skills and collaborate with other builders.

Spooky Slime, 2-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, drop in and make your own slime! For kids in grades K-5. Registration requested.

For teens

ATLAS (At the Library After School), 3:15-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. Drop in after school for hang time, games, crafts and snacks. For grades 6-12.

Family Movie Night, 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Drop in and watch your favorite lasagna-eating cat, “Garfield”, and his pal, Odie. Snacks will be served, but feel free to bring your own picnic. Everyone is welcome.

Ukulele OWLS Reception and Performance, 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25. Join the Ukulele OWLS for morning refreshments and a ukulele performance, as the group shows off their new musical skills learned over the past nine weeks. RSVP requested. The Ukulele OWLS: Beginning Ukulele for Older, Wiser Learners, is a 10-week beginner intensive ukulele workshop taught by Kristin Thompson of Weed Patch Music Company, and funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission in partnership with the Family and Social Services Administration.

Tech Help Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. Drop in any Thursday for basic help with electronic devices and software questions.

Thompson for a reading from “Daybreak and Deep,” her 2024 Indiana Authors Award-nominated book of poetry, followed by a book signing and chance to chat with the author. RSVPs helpful.

BCPL Craft Club: Macrame keychains, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Learn basic macrame knots to make your own keychains. All tools and materials supplied. For adults and teens 13 and older. Registration requested.

Caregiver Connections: Adult caretaker resource fair, 9:45 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7. A resource fair for caregivers of adults with memory loss and other health issues, featuring a full slate of presenters to help you navigate your caregiving journey, plus local service booths, refreshments and a door prize drawing.

Book Bike deliveries

Tuesdays, Oct. 22, & 29 from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Weekly in-town stops for library book delivery and returns. Meet the Book Bike at one of our outdoor locations in the Salt Creek Plaza area to pick up items placed on hold, return your library books, pick up program schedules or get a library card.

How it works:

Place items on hold through your account on the library website by noon Monday. Select “Book Bike” as the pickup location, then meet the Book Bike on Tuesdays at one of the outdoor stops:

  • 11 to 11:20 a.m. at Brown County YMCA
  • 11:20 to 11:35 a.m. at Willow Manor Apartments
  • 11:35 to 11:50 a.m. at Hawthorne Hills Apartments

The Brown County History Center and Pioneer Village

The Pioneer Village is open for the summer/fall season. The village will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tours can be arranged upon request. Call the Brown County History Center at (812) 988-2899 to make arrangements. The Village is maintained by donations. Come and visit the past.

The History Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come see all things Brown County. The archives are open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special times may be arranged by calling the Center at (812) 988-2899.

Raptor Rendezvous Fundraiser

The Indiana Raptor Center announces its annual fundraiser, Raptor Rendezvous, on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Festivities will include a bird presentation, sandwich buffet and silent auction. Tickets are $35 and include entrance to the park. Tickets may be purchased by mailing a check to PO Box 1153, Nashville, IN 47448, calling the Center at 812-988-8990 with a credit card, or using the PayPal donation buttons on the center’s website, indianaraptorcenter.org. Please indicate that you are interested in tickets.

If you are interested in supporting us but cannot attend the event, please consider sending a donation to the PO Box listed above.

In other news, we are in great need of sheet and towel donations for use in animal care. We have had an extra large number of patients this year, and our supply of sheets and towels is very depleted. Please contact us at 812-988-8990 for drop-off information. If you are coming to the Rendezvous, you may also bring sheets and towels with you at that time.

Abe Martin Bazaar Nov. 9

Looking for something to do? Come to the Abe Martin Bazaar at the Brown County History Center on East Gould Street (one block north of the stop light) on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A diverse gathering of vendors will be selling a variety of items from Christmas decorations to jewelry to wood turned bowls to locally made soap, and a variety on craft items just right for Christmas gifts.

Brown County Rising: A film series about community wellness

Brown County Rising film series will continue at 2 p.m. on Nov. 24 with the viewing of “Wrestling Ghosts” at Brown County Playhouse.
