Letter: Political sign vandalism has no place in our democracy

To the editor:

We are your friends, we are your neighbors. We are the Brown County Democratic Party. We are hardworking members of this community. We have seen Trump flags flying for over eight years now. We have not complained openly or made moves to damage them or have them removed. We believe in freedom of speech and property rights.

I sincerely hope that whoever has taken our party’s signs and whoever damaged the Democratic signs at Eagle Park are merely juveniles, lacking good judgment and seeking a thrill. Even if so, who are their role models? Why do they feel entitled to damage other peoples’ property and quash freedom of speech to hinder fair elections? I believe Trump signs and other Republican signs have not been subjected to this type of disrespect. I feel it is safe to assume that the perpetrators are supporters of Republican Party candidates. Why do these individuals seek to repress the Democratic candidates? How can they claim to support democracy in our country while behaving in such a manner?

Please think long and hard when you cast your ballot. If your candidate and his party want to oppress political expression, what do you think will happen when your candidate is elected? Our great nation was founded on belief in freedom of expression and fair elections. It is the basis of our democracy.
