UPDATE: Alleged Gunman in Mount Liberty Road standoff indentified

The man taken into custody after a six-hour standoff on Mt. Liberty Road in Brown County on Thursday evening has been identified as Daniel Stockdale of Nashville.

Brown County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Detective Sgt. Joshua Stargell issued the following news release Friday afternoon:

“On Thursday, October 24, 2024, at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Brown County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 1800 block of Mt Liberty Road in Nashville, Indiana, for a trespass complaint. Deputies responded and soon after attempted to make contact with the alleged suspect at a neighboring residence in the 1900 block of Mt Liberty Road.

“As deputies were approaching the residence, the suspect, Daniel Stockdale of Nashville, Indiana, pointed a long gun at deputies through an exterior window. As deputies took cover, a single gunshot was fired by Stockdale in an unknown direction. Assistance was requested from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Indiana State Police.

“After a nearly six-hour standoff with law enforcement, Stockdale was taken into custody without further incident. Stockdale was transported to Columbus Regional Health for medical clearance and later transported to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office where he remanded to the Brown County Jail.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office and multiple emergency agencies responded Thursday evening to a report of a gunman who reportedly fired at least one shot in the presence of responding officers in the 1900 block of Mount Liberty Road.

A law enforcement source said that after several hours, a suspect was taken into custody and no one was injured. No details were immediately available from the Brown County Sheriff’s department Friday morning.

Emergency responders from Brown County and other responding agencies were on the scene for several hours Thursday after receiving 911 calls about a person at the location with apparent mental health issues. Johnson County responded with a SWAT team that provided mutual aid.
According to information provided to the Daily Journal in Franklin by Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess, that county’s SWAT team assisted Brown County with a search warrant for an individual who was taken into custody by Brown County deputies.

“The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is currently dealing with an isolated incident in the 1900 block of Mt Liberty Road. Please avoid the area, if possible.

“No other details will be released at this time.”

According to dispatch records, Lifeline arrived on the scene at 8:41 p.m., and conservation officers and multiple agencies responded between 5:16 and 10:52 p.m.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office and multiple agencies responded Thursday evening to a report of a gunshot fired by a suspect who fled from the scene of an isolated incident in the 1900 block of Mount Liberty Road.

No further details were immediately available from the department Friday morning.

Thursday evening, the department posted the following message its Facebook page asking residents to avoid the area:

“The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is currently dealing with an isolated incident in the 1900 block of Mt Liberty Road. Please avoid the area, if possible.
