Sports briefs for week of Dec. 28

Try tai chi for free at YMCA this week

Marc Marshall will teach one more free practice session of tai chi at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St. It will be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner accompanied by deep breathing.

Marshall also will teach a free tai chi program at the Brown County Public Library from 10 am. to noon Saturday, Jan. 21.

For more information on the class at the library, visit browncounty.lib.in.us, or call the library at 812-988-2850.

Spend New Year’s Day doing yoga

River Light Yoga in downtown Nashville will offer an open-to-all yoga practice on New Year’s Day.

An all-levels practice will take place from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, in support of the Brown County Literacy Coalition. Last year, those gathering for the 1.5-hour class donated $125 to this organization. While a $15 donation is encouraged, there is no requirement that anyone donate.

The class will be slow paced and lighthearted and will include some favorite restorative poses. “It will be an ‘easing in’ to the New Year, not a workout,” teacher Lee Edgren said.

The River Light Yoga studio is on the third floor of the Village Green Building, 61 W. Main. For more information, call Edgren at 812-988-9642.
