Deadline this week to apply for state arts grants
Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) Arts Project Support and Arts Operating Support I grant applications for 2018-19 are now available.
Guidelines for these grants and the link to establish an IAC online account can be found at browncountygives.org. The deadline for grant applications is Thursday, March 1.

Photographers to teach introduction to Photoshop
An introduction to photo editing will be presented in a classroom setting from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at B3 Gallery.
Photoshop CS5 will be used. Handouts on information covered during the class will be included.
The class costs $50 per person.
An instructor from Bussert Images will go over how to open files (RAW and jpg); how to make adjustments such as improving contrast and color saturation; how a computer sizes images (pixels) vs. how people size images (inches); image size vs. canvas size; tools available for editing and sharpening photos; controls and how they affect the final print; and generally what is possible with photo editing software.
This class is an overview and will not teach advanced photo editing.

Learn how to paint kitchen cabinets, furniture
A free cabinet painting demo will be offered at the Brown County YMCA between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3. Visitors can come by anytime to see cabinet door samples; learn about color, style and technique options; ask questions; learn about upcoming classes; and learn about other painting options and services.

Artisans host painting in the park event
Tri-State Artisans will host a painting in the park event from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at the Abe Martin Lodge.
It includes a social hour from 5 to 6 p.m. and painting from 6 to 8 p.m.
For $45 per person, the price includes a drink ticket and hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will be available.

Register for jazz history class by March 13
On Tuesdays, March 20 through May 1, classes in “Indiana Jazz: History, Scenes, Places and Personas” will be taught by musician, historian and author Monika Herzig, Ph.D. at the Brown County Art Guild.
Guest artists Jamey Abersold, Grammy-nominated Wayne Wallace, violinist Carolyn Dutton and others will participate in class discussion and will perform with Herzig after class at Out of the Ordinary restaurant.
The classes will be taught from 6 to 8 p.m. at the guild on Van Buren Street, followed from 8 to 10 p.m. by the concerts across the street.
No prior music knowledge is needed to sign up for the class, which costs $149. It is offered as an Ivy Tech Center for Lifelong Learning class.
Food and drink will be sold at Out of the Ordinary.

Celtic band featured at inn March 17
Celtica will play a St. Patrick’s Day concert on Saturday, March 17 at the Brown County Inn. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; the concert will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
The band includes Tammera Lane, guitarist Tim Dooley, guitarist Jeff Foster, fiddler Carolyn Dutton, Tom Lozano on hurdy gurdy and percussion, and Clancy Clements on bagpipe and pennywhistle. Lane uses a mix of instruments including keyboard, hammered dulcimer, field organ, hurdy gurdy, bowed psaltery and harp, backed by Dooley on guitar, Irish bouzouki, bodhran drum and mandolin.

Workshop aims to unlock creativity
Artists of all levels can join Rena Brouwer and artist/composer Cheryl Kaldahl for a workshop designed to explore and unlock creativity Saturday, March 17.
The “realm of expression” workshop take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St. Using three keys — color, music and word — Brouwer and Kaldahl will guide the program including a demonstration in the morning. A light, seasonal lunch will be served at noon, followed by a guided work session from 1 to 3 p.m.

Explore sound meditation, acoustics at guild
Reiki Master practitioner Janiece Jaffe will lead an exploration of singing bowls and voice for sound healing at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 18. The event will be at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

The Brown County Photography Club is sponsoring a two-hour Introduction to Photography class from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 in meeting room B at the Brown County Public Library. This class is free and open to the public.
Topics will include basic camera settings, composition, light metering, post processing, camera care, and keeping digital images safe.
The class is given by Jessica and Sharon Bussert and is appropriate for both digital and film photographers.

Learn tips from seasoned plein air painters
Jeanne McLeish and Jerry Smith will share best practices, tips and advice on painting in plein air from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Brown County Art Guild. The free event at 48 S. Van Buren St. is open to the public. No registration is needed.
Topics will include supplies and equipment, as well as how to use plein air studies to create studio paintings.

Photo exhibit on display through end of March
Chateau Thomas Winery in Nashville is hosting “Brown County and Beyond,” an exhibit by local photographers Jessica and Sharon Bussert, through March 31.
Brown County and Beyond highlights some of the Busserts’ favorite local images as well as wildlife and landscapes from their recent travels. The show is presented in color and black and white.
The Busserts are co-owners of B3 Gallery in Nashville. Their work also is represented in several Midwestern and West Coast locations and has been included in European exhibits.

Area students, paint a plow for INDOT
The Indiana Department of Transportation’s Southeast District is accepting applications from area schools wishing to participate in Paint the Plow for 2018.
High school, junior high and middle school art students can develop designs that promote school spirit, community pride, INDOT snow operations or highway safety. The students then paint the plow that has been delivered pre-primed by a nearby INDOT unit.
The INDOT Southeast District includes schools in Brown County. Only students currently enrolled in the applicant school may participate.

Dinner theater performances slated at inn
Beginning Saturday, March 24, performances of “Tumbleweed: A Town of the Old West” will be presented as dinner theater at Artists Colony Inn.
Shows start at 6 p.m. at the inn, 105 S. Van Buren St. Tickets, $50 per person, include dinner.

Local artists to show at Indiana Artisan Marketplace
Seven Brown County artists and craftsmen will show and sell their wares at the Indiana Artisan Marketplace at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Expo Hall April 7 to 8. More than 100 artisans have been juried in from across Indiana and Kentucky to showcase their art and food.
Local participants include Rosie Bolte of The Uncommon Gourd, Nashville, gourd painting; Adam Egenolf of Egenolf Ceramics, Nineveh, high fire English porcelain; Amy Greely of Amy Greely Studio, Nashville, metal jewelry; Gabriel Lehman of gabriellehman.com, Nineveh, handweaving on floor looms; Susan Spagnuolo of Bear Wallow Distillery, Nashville, handcrafted distilled spirits; and Larry Spears of Spears Pottery, Nashville, clay pottery.
An exhibit, All IN, featuring the finest work by Indiana Artisans over the past 10 years of the program, will be included in event admission. It costs $10 for adults and is free for children 15 and younger; parking costs $5.

Register to create batik art on paper
A workshop which combines drawing, painting, wax, embellishing and dyeing with inks and watercolors is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14.
The batik on paper class will be taught at B3 Gallery, upstairs at 61 W. Main St. Pre-registration is required for the workshop, which costs $65 per person.
Participants can create two or three small pieces. The class is not recommended for children under 12.

Shared art studio space available in town
B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.
S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.
S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.
The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”
Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.
