Junior high sports kick off this month

School doesn’t start until Aug. 8, but some Brown County Junior High School sports start this month.

BCJHS football was to begin summer conditioning/skills practice sessions on Monday, July 16, Tuesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 19. Practices sessions will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m.

BCJHS cheer will practice on Tuesday, July 17 in the BCJHS gym between 6 and 8 p.m.

BCJHS volleyball will begin tryouts at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 in the BCJHS gym.

BCJHS cross-country will begin at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. Pick-up after practice will be at the junior high.

Sign up early for adult softball league

Brown County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations from players 16 and older for adult co-rec softball.

The deadline to register teams is Friday, July 27.

Monday, Aug. 13 is the first game. On-site registration at the first game is $30 per player. Those who register before that date pay only $25 per player.

Games will be on Monday and Tuesday nights, with Thursday rain dates.

This is a recreational league for fun and exercise, so all skill levels are welcome.

Parents can still register kids for soccer

Late registration for fall Brown County Parks and Recreation soccer is still open to children ages 3 to 13.

Practices will begin in early August. Games will be on Sunday afternoons and weeknights.

Player fees are $45 for players ages 3 to 8 and $50 for ages 9 to 13. A $10 discount is given for each additional child. A $10 late fee per player will apply, since the regular sign-up deadline has passed.

Coaches, assistant coaches and team sponsors are needed. Background checks are required for coaches and assistants for player safety.

Businesses wishing to sponsor a team also are needed; the sponsorship fee is $175.

State parks offering fitness challenge, prizes

The Indiana State Parks Fitness Challenge encourages visitors to walk, run, bike, paddle or swim at least 25 miles in one or more state park property this year.

Horseback riders can participate by riding at least 100 miles on state park or reservoir horse trails.

Those who complete the challenge by Nov. 30 will be entered into a drawing for prizes, including a 2019 state park entrance pass, Outdoor Indiana magazine subscriptions, DNR camping gift cards and state park inn gift certificates.

Participants must download and keep a fitness challenge log that documents their visits to state parks and get a signature from park staff each time they visit. To print the free log/entry form or get more information, visit dnr.IN.gov/healthy.

Disc golf league plays every Tuesday

The Brown County Disc Golf Alliance plays regularly in Brown County and new members are welcome.

The group plays Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park or at the Brown County Country Club, alternating months. In July, it’s the club.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played before. Loaner discs are available.

Register for cardboard boat fundraiser

SWEETWATER — Brown County Parks and Recreation will host a cardboard regatta competition, Corrugated Chaos, Saturday morning, Sept. 22.

The race will begin at 10:30 or 11 a.m., with sign-in at Sweetwater Beach beforehand.

The challenge is to design and build a boat out of corrugated cardboard, powered by one to four crew members, capable of traversing and racing a 100-yard-long course in the lake.

Awards will be given for most creative design, fastest in the county, as well as “Gilligan” (most likely to leave you stranded) and “Titanic” (most spectacular sinking) awards.

The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The cost is $10 per boat entered, or $25 per business.

Proceeds will go toward grounds upkeep and program improvements at parks and rec.

Yoga variety offered at Simply Fitness

Simply Fitness, 59 E. Main St., offers beginner yoga at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays. The cost is $5 per 30-minute session.

Vinyasa flow yoga is taught at 6 p.m. Tuesdays for $10 per 45-minute session. Private training or yoga sessions are available for $15 per 30-minute session.

Yin/Restorative Yoga w/Annie is a 90-minute class with Annie Patrick Buechlein that starts at 6 p.m. Thursday. By reservation only, sessions cost $18 each.

Reiki, Japanese energy healing sessions, with Buechlein are available by appointment.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
