Celebrate ‘all things art’ during Art Colony Weekend

Brown County will celebrate the fourth annual Art Colony Weekend Sept. 7 to 9 with several events sponsored by the Brown County Art Guild.

A Prelude pARTy will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. It will include tours of the library’s permanent art collection, live music, a silent auction, wine and refreshments. Local artisans will work for all to enjoy. Tickets for $10 each are available at the library or the Brown County Visitors Center, 211 S. Van Buren St. Proceeds from the event will benefit library programming and the purchase of a historical painting.

Visitors can experience the tradition of plein air painting as registered artists paint on site during the 30th annual Great Outdoor Art Contest Saturday, Sept. 8 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site in Belmont. The event from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. will include an outdoor afternoon concert by Stephen and Nancy Dickey and Friends. A $3 parking fee will be charged upon arrival; food and beverages will be sold in the beer garden provided by Salt Creek Brewery and Brozinni Pizzeria.

AGAIN, a festival of new art made with old stuff, will feature works by artists using found, scrounged, rescued, reimagined and reinvented objects. It will be open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Emerald Pencil, 23 N. Jefferson St. downtown.

Guests also can try their hand at painting a section of a community artwork at the Community Paint Together Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Village Green between 1 and 3 p.m.

In celebration of Brown County Art Gallery’s 40th anniversary, the gallery’s entire permanent Indiana Heritage Arts collection will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 Artist Drive. Participants also can meet the artists behind the IHA paintings.

A tribute to America, rock ‘n’ roll and John Cougar Mellencamp will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St. The tribute will feature Toby Myers, a bass guitarist who played with Mellencamp’s band. A silent auction will benefit Brown County Weekend Backpacks, which helps to feed local children on weekends. Bidding is under way now at bcweekendbackpacks.org/playhouse-silent-auction.

The Villagescape Paint-Out Painters will be out and about from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9. Paintings will be judged and awards given. The event is free for spectators.

An auction featuring historical works by Brown County Art Guild founders as well as current member artists will be conducted Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., hosted by Jackson’s Auction. Seating starts at 1 p.m. and the auction begins at 2:30 p.m. From 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, a preview of the works to be auctioned will be offered at the History Center.

Works by artists such as Marie Goth, V.J. Cariani, Carl Graf, Ada Shulz and others will be sold. Payments by cash, check or credit card will be accepted. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the art guild. Food and drinks will be sold.
