Free activities for children, teens at library this fall

Brown County Public Library is offering the following free activities:

Wednesdays

  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Oct. 24, play party for 5 and younger (and caregivers)
  • 1 to 2:30 p.m. — Oct. 24, roundtable discussion topic: “Travel; Most interesting trip or Where Would you Go and Why?” fourth Wednesdays.
  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. — Oct. 24 and Nov. 28, teen craft program and snacks.
  • 5 to 6 p.m. — Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, Cover-to-Cover Kids Book Club. Children can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Thursdays

  • 3 to 5 p.m. — Weekly, homework and tutoring for teens on the lower level of the library. Volunteers from the literacy coalition and library staff will be available.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Oct. 25, Nov. 29, teens can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.
  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Weekly, Nov. 1 to Dec. 6, Creative Builders for 12 and younger, with Lego, Duplos, Keva Blocks, Magnatiles, more.
  • 2 to 2:45 p.m. — Weekly, Nov. 1 to Dec. 6, Ready Readers for ages 6 to 12, with practice reading, exploring, sharing.

Mondays

  • 11 to 11:30 a.m. — Weekly, Oct. 29 to Dec. 3, Toddler Time for ages 1 to 3, singing, playing, reading.

Tuesdays

  • 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Weekly, Oct. 30 to Dec. 4, Music & Movement Story Time for 6 and younger, music, dancing, stories.
  • 4 to 6 p.m. — Oct. 30, Basic Computing presented by volunteer Ryan Ridge

Learn about Lake Monroe watershed concerns

BLOOMINGTON — Friends of Lake Monroe will conduct a public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Monroe County Public Library auditorium.

FLM has learned that Hoosier National Forest is proposing to log more than 4,000 acres in the Lake Monroe watershed in Jackson County. Mike Chaveas, HNF forest supervisor, will present information about this project and answer questions.

FLM will live-stream this meeting on Facebook for those who can’t be physically present.

This meeting will replace the group’s November meeting to accommodate the Thanksgiving holiday.

Fire department to host senior wellness clinic

STONE HEAD — Southern Brown Volunteer Fire Department will host its first wellness clinic provided by the Brown County Health Department on Friday, Oct. 26. It will start at 11 a.m. at the fire station, 4040 State Road 135 South.

This clinic will be targeted at senior citizens. “We would like your input on how we can help you stay in your homes longer,” said township Trustee Vicki Payne.

A health department nurse will meet with residents privately in the trustee’s office where she will check blood sugar, blood pressure, iron levels and weight, and will document this for comparison the following month.

A small meal will be provided and fellowship with other seniors. In order for the organizers have enough materials, call the trustee’s office at 812-988-4020 and leave a message if you plan to attend, or just drop in and take your chances.

Pancake breakfast to benefit junior high

Brown County Junior High School will host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at the school cafeteria. The cost is $7 per person or $20 per family for unlimited pancakes, sausages and drinks. Principal Brian Garman and Assistant Principal Greg Pagnard will be the cooks.

This fundraiser supports the student activity fund. Junior high students also will conduct a silent auction of works donated by art class students, and choir students will perform during the event.

Neighborhood Church of God revival planned

CORDRY-SWEETWATER — The Neighborhood Church of God, 7440 Sweetwater Trail, will host its revival and homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 28 beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Jessica Hall will preach for both events. Music will be by the Woodsmen Quartet. A dinner will follow.

Bonfire with food, sharing planned Sunday

Do Something Brown County will sponsor its second annual bonfire at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at Foxfire Park downtown. The event, across the street from the BP gas station, will include hot dogs, hot drinks, s’mores, music and sharing. Those attending are encouraged to “bring a chair and a guest.”

New visitor center opening delayed at historic site

BELMONT — Due to unforeseen construction delays, the new Singing Winds Visitor Center will not open on Oct. 28 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. Instead, the opening will occur in spring 2019.

The site remains open for the public to enjoy during fall in Brown County while construction continues. The site is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays at 4220 T.C. Steele Road.

Town adds bagged leaf pickup dates

The Town of Nashville will pick up bagged leaves only on Tuesdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 13.

Nashville residents can bag and leave them by the curb. Bags with trash, sticks or other objects included will not be accepted.

Get free technology help at library

Volunteer Ryan Ridge will offer a free tutorial at the Brown County Public Library for those who struggle with computers, smartphones or tablets. From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, Ridge will be available in a lower-level meeting room of the library, 205 Locust Lane.

Volunteers needed for community Thanksgiving

Volunteers are needed to help with and carry on a free community Thanksgiving dinner that has been hosted by the Brown County EMT Association for years. In August, it was announced that the association was dissolving.

The plan is to use the organization’s remaining funds to keep hosting the community Thanksgiving dinner for at least five years. But volunteers are needed to help host the dinner and the association is looking for another group to take over the dinner.

Christmas bazaar, quilt raffle planned in November

St. Agnes Catholic Church will host its 2018 Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3.

The event will take place in the church basement, 1008 McLary Road.

Items for sale will include Christmas decorations, crafts, books, jewelry and accessories, aprons, kids’ items, collectibles and paper craft products. There will also be a silent auction of gift baskets and tabletop Christmas trees.

Cookies will be available for purchase by the pound along with other baked treats. Coffee and hot tea will be available from Sweetea’s Tea Shop.

A Brown County Stars queen-size quilt will be raffled, with the drawing at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Rummage sale at Nazarene church

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East, will host more than 10 families at indoor booths selling new and used clothing, gear, household goods, decor, furniture, tools, “man stuff” and more.

The church is across from the north entrance to Brown County State Park.

Booths are $20 each with a table (8 by 12 feet) and chairs. All fees benefit Parkview church ministries. Those interested in a booth can email [email protected].

Veterans Day program open to community

Brown County Schools will host its annual community Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the high school’s Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium. Keith Baker will be the guest speaker.

Veterans are welcome at a social hour at 8:30 a.m. and at a luncheon after the program. Doors open to the public at 9 a.m.

All veterans are welcome to attend and be recognized, in addition to the widows of fallen veterans. A special commemoration will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Banks’ ultimate sacrifice will be remembered. A military salute will be performed by the Brown County High School band and high school and junior high choirs. History Club members will make presentations and winners will be announced of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests.

Bazaar, bean dinner, bake sale planned Nov. 10

HAMLEN TWP. — A holiday bazaar, quilt raffle and bean dinner will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Goshen Community Church, 2798 Gatesville Road, 3 miles east of Bean Blossom.

The bazaar will feature crocheted hats, bead work, afghans, cloth books for babies, potholders and other kitchen items, jams and jellies for sale.

Bake sale items will include cookies, pies, bread and persimmon pudding.

For dinner, a bowl of bean soup, cornbread muffin, cole slaw, choice of dessert and drink will be served for a $5 donation.

Raffle tickets for a queen-size quilt, “Glory Bound,” in autumn colors, can be purchased for $1 each or six tickets for $5 during the bazaar. The winner will be drawn at 3 p.m. and need not be present to win. For tickets prior to the bazaar, call Ruth Fox at 812-988-7892.

Community Christmas tree lighting date set

The Brown County Community Tree Lighting will take place Friday, Nov. 23 at the Brown County History Center on East Gould Street. Refreshments and live holiday tunes played by Brown County Christmas Music Sing-Along artists will start at 5:30 and the tree lighting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Sessions are limited to 30 to 60 minutes and are best used for instruction on how to use the library catalog, databases, digital resources and the Internet. Call 812-988-2850 for an appointment.

Christmas drive-through light show set

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground will host Christmas at the Bean, an interactive, drive-through light show and live nativity scene. The event will run from dusk to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 28 to 30, and Friday, Dec. 14 to Thursday, Jan. 3.

Santa Train will roll into Brown County Nov. 30

HELMSBURG — For the 29th year, the Indiana Rail Road Co. will bring Santa, Mrs. Claus and a train full of storybook characters to Morgantown and Helmsburg to visit with local children on Friday, Nov. 30.

The Santa Train is due to arrive at the tracks by the Morgantown Fire Station at 6:30 p.m. It will leave at 8 p.m.

The train is scheduled to pull into the Jackson Township fire department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, at 8:30 p.m. It will depart at 10 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

‘Believe’ live holiday show coming to Playhouse

A holiday variety show for all ages with Christmas songs, dancing, comedy, special lighting and holiday characters will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Performances will begin Friday, Nov. 30 and run weekends through Sunday, Dec. 23 at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St.

Tickets cost $21.50 per adult and $20.50 per senior/student/military. Children 10 and younger are free with a paid adult.

The Golden Ticket Production is presented by I Love Brown County and the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Tickets available for self-guided cabin tour

Four log homes and a Presbyterian log church will be open to ticket holders for self-guided tours between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

The tour will include a 1937 home built using logs from the 1800s, a new partial-log home, a completely renovated log home, a log home once owned by Brown County artist Marie Goth, and a 19th century log church. Homeowners will be at each location to provide history on the homes and the church.

Tickets will be available at the History Center and the Brown County Visitors Center for $10 each prior to the event. Tickets at the History Center, visitors center and log church the day of the event will cost $12. Proceeds will go to the Brown County Historical Society for programming.

Local game convention planned in spring

BroCoCon, Brown County’s first game convention, is slated from Friday to Sunday, March 29 to 31 at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The event, hosted by The Toy Chest is intended to be family- and adult-friendly; adults are welcome with or without children.

The convention will include booths set up by category and vendor to learn, play and/or buy games, with popular strategy, family, party and toddler games available.

Game instruction will be provided, with time to learn and play new games, get instruction on strategy games, participate in a scavenger hunt around town and enjoy a 21-and-older after-party, as well as other activities.

BroCoCon tickets cost $10 per adult and $5 per child, with 2 and younger admitted free. The adult after-party, $10, includes a drink ticket. Fees of about $1.50 per ticket will be added.
