Four overdoses reported in the past month

Local police have responded to four overdoses in the past month. The most recent happened over the weekend.

At least two of the overdoses involved heroin or opiates, officers said.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, police were dispatched to two different locations for a report of a woman who had overdosed.

The first call came from the 5300 block of Lanam Ridge Road just before 9 p.m., but police were unable to find the woman.

About an hour later, police were dispatched for another overdose in the 8400 block of Four Mile Ridge Road where they found the 19-year-old, about 15 miles away from the previous location. She admitted to taking prescription pills and was taken to a hospital for further treatment, the Brown County Sheriff’s Department reported.

She was awake when police arrived and did not need to be revived.

The first overdose was reported Sept. 29 at a home on Gold Point Road. Deputies with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police, EMS and Hamblen Township volunteer firefighters responded for a report of a 28-year-old man who was found to be unresponsive, but breathing, according to Det. Paul Henderson with the sheriff’s department.

A family member had found the man in his bedroom and called for help for a suspected drug overdose. When police and EMS arrived, the man was given three doses of Naloxone. He did not respond initially to the Naloxone and was treated by EMS and taken to the hospital for further treatment, Henderson said.

That man is believed to have taken an opiate.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16, sheriff’s deputies, EMS and the Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the 7600 block of State Road 46 East for a possible overdose.

A 35-year-old man was found unresponsive in the bathroom by his mother after she heard a noise, drawing her attention to him, Henderson said.

The man was unresponsive, but still breathing. He was given two doses of Naloxone initially, but as he was being treated by EMS, he became responsive and started talking, Henderson said.

He refused further treatment and was not taken to the hospital. The sheriff’s department was unsure what drugs the man had taken.

On Oct. 25, police responded to a home on Green Valley Road for a report of a 29-year-old man who overdosed and was found by his father, lying in the grass outside of a barn.

The father could not find his cellphone and had to flag down a passerby to call 911, Det. Brian Shrader said.

Shrader said four doses of Naloxone were used to revive the man, who was then taken to Columbus Regional Hospital.

The man was arrested at the hospital on a probation violation warrant. He was still in the Brown County jail as of Oct. 26.

Shrader said heroin is the suspected cause of that overdose and that a criminal case had been opened.
