Driver: Gust of wind preceded crash near park entrance

Two people were injured and taken to the hospital after a one-vehicle crash on State Road 46 East near the Brown County State Park entrance on Oct. 20.

The car had crashed into a tree near the state park’s north entrance just before 7 p.m., wrote Lt. Mike Moore with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department in his crash report.

Moore attempted to talk with the driver Ryan Hill, 46, of Greenwood, but Hill was unable to respond verbally. He would only move his head up and down to respond “Yes” to questions even if the answer was “No,” the accident report states. He reported that Hill had a head injury over his left eye that had been bleeding.

Hill’s passenger, Theresa Chambers, 56, of Bloomington, said that Hill was able to talk, but did not know why he wasn’t able to answer Moore’s questions.

EMS 7 took Chambers and Hill to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment. Chambers reportedly had pain in her shoulder/upper arm.

A week later, Moore contacted Hill, he said he did not remember much about the crash, but that his car had been hit with a gust of wind just prior. Hill said he believes he recovered after the car was blown, but his head on the driver’s side window, and his memory isn’t clear after that.

Both Hill and Chambers were wearing seat belts. Airbags deployed for both of them. The vehicle was towed.
