Police: Man punched, grabbed woman by throat

JACKSON TWP. — A Brown County man faces two felonies and a misdemeanor after police say he punched a woman, grabbed her by the throat and hit her with a baseball bat.

Deputies responded to a home in 6000 block of Lick Creek Road on May 18 for a report of a domestic battery, according to a probable cause affidavit by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool. The suspect, Charles Philpot, 22, had left the scene in a car headed toward Nashville.

When police arrived, the victim was outside talking on the phone. She told police Philpot was outside yelling at her and then took her phone. She said Philpot tried to push her down and she pushed him back. He then punched her in the eye and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing it, the affidavit states.

Philpot then allegedly grabbed a baseball bat before hitting the woman in the stomach and leg. She went inside and Philpot followed her. He told her to lie down, and he grabbed a knife, put it to her throat and told her he was going to kill her, according to the affidavit.

The victim grabbed the knife to get it away from her neck, causing her to cut her hand. Philpot then her that if she told anyone, he would kill her.

Philpot was found in Nashville and was brought back to the Brown County Law Enforcement Center for an interview. While talking with police, Philpot was “extremely agitated” and denied all allegations before recanting and admitting he took the victim’s cellphone, the affidavit states.

Philpot also denied touching or hitting the victim, but during the interview, he made a statement about wanting to go home and jump out of a tree. He was then booked into the jail.

On May 20, Philpot was charged with strangulation, a Level 6 felony; intimidation, a Level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
