Local groups reach deal on utility bill

Staff Reports

The Brown County Music Center’s management group and the Town of Nashville have reached a conclusion over their utility bill dispute.

The Nashville Town Council approved an adjusted bill at their March 5 meeting. The total amount is now $6,195. It was originally $12,695. As a compromise, a $6,500 charge for extra contract labor to get the music center connected to town utilities was removed from the bill, which cut it nearly in half.

“We just appreciate everything that the town has done working to get this resolved, and we are prepared to cut a check as soon as we get the final bill from the town,” said management group co-president Kevin Ault at the March 10 music center management meeting.

The bill was discussed among music center and town officials on Feb. 27. The music center reps contended that the center had incurred other unexpected costs from poor marking and locating of existing utility lines, so they disputed having to pay this bill.

“Instead of having to worry about legal fees … we decided to compromise and take off our labor charge that we paid on our side,” town council President Jane Gore explained to other town council members.

The motion to pay the new bill was approved unanimously by the management group. The town council’s vote was 4-1 with Anna Hofstetter against. She said she wanted to “make sure what we’re doing is fair for all customers.”
