Jennings County (white) and Brown County (blue) players point at each other or give out distanced fist-bumps instead of shaking hands after Friday’s game at Brown County. The no-handshake rule is a COVID-19 precaution. Jacob Moore | Submitted

Coach’s comments: The Eagles took a step forward with a 5-0 victory over the Cougars of Trinity Lutheran. Our singles positions led the way tonight with straight-set victories. Reid, Josh and Nolan all played at a high level, which should get them ready for their matchups tomorrow with BNL. Our doubles teams took a little longer to get going, but in the end were both victorious, as our No. 2 doubles team went to a second-set tie-break. JV players Austen and Jack both competed tonight and both came away with wins. The Eagles travel to Bedford North Lawrence tomorrow to take on an always competitive Stars tennis team.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles’ wings were clipped by a very solid Bedford North Lawrence Stars team. I really felt early on that our team was playing well enough to win the match. All of the singles players, Josh Miller, Nolan Patterson and Reid Davis, all jumped out to early leads, but BNL found their groove and turned the tables on our guys. With the momentum changed, Nolan and Reid fought hard but came up short. Josh used the switch in momentum to take the second set 6-3 and forced a 10-point tie-break for the third set. Our doubles teams were the opposite, as they both lost first sets 6-1, but came back to play better tennis in their second set. Noah and Spencer just didn’t find the groove they have had lately, and with a new partner in junior Austin Deckard, senior Aidan Burt pushed their opponents at No. 2 doubles to a short or two of playing a third set. Austen played very well tonight. The Eagles are in action on Saturday as they host the Brown County Invitational at 9 a.m. at the BCHS tennis courts. As they are the defending champions, I expect, as I do every match, that the Eagles will compete and have a chance to win another title. Then, it is a much-needed break for the Eagles.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles placed two individuals, in Nolan Patterson at No. 2 singles and Reid Davis at No. 3 singles, and two teams, the No. 1 doubles team of Spencer Blee and Noah Cochran, and Aidan Burt and Eli Sichting at No. 2 doubles, into the championship matches of the Steve Makurat Invitational. As the defending champions, this was a great place for the Eagles. Steve Makurat Invitational rival and eventual 2020 champion Brownstown Central also placed two individuals and two teams in the championship round. It came down to the head-to-head matchups at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles as each of the other positions, Brownstown’s Ethan Isaacs dominated at No. 1 singles as did the Eagles duo of Spencer Blee and Noah Coahran at No. 1 doubles. With the Eagles only winning one of the three, a two-point victory and invitational championship went to the Braves. Josh Miller came back from a loss in round one to help the Eagles score a point with a consolation point. Josh showed real maturity in coming back to win after an emotionally charged loss in round one. Reid Davis was his usual self with consistency and placement, taking two easy victories on the day. Doubles specialists Spencer and Noah rebounded from a tough loss at BNL to play the best tennis of the day for the Eagles. Their combination of a dominating net game and serves were really unstoppable. They really played some elevated tennis today. I expect this to carry over into next week, as the Eagles will host three matches next week starting with Triton Central on Tuesday and completing their week on Thursday as they host WIC for Owen Valley with the Olympians of Columbus East in the middle. The JV Eagles also got to play a lot of matches today. This is great for the young Eagles, as they will be carrying the expectations of Brown County tennis next year and into the future. The Eagles will enjoy the much-needed rest the rest of the weekend brings. Once again, we are extremely fortunate to be playing the game we love.

Brown Co.: Christie Sebastian 52, Annika Evenson 54, Abby Padgett 58, Avery Patterson 58, Savannah Poling 70, Ava Padgett 71.

Coach’s comments: Playing at Deer Creek Golf Course in a tri-meet with Monrovia and South Putnam, the Eagles posted a 222, their best nine-hole score of the season, but still fell to their competitors. Junior Christie Sebastian shot a 52, the fourth-lowest score of the day, to lead the Eagles. Also scoring for the Eagles were Annika Evenson with a 54, and Abby Padgett and Avery Patterson with 58s. Monrovia’s Brooke Farley took medalist honors with a 45. Freshmen Savannah Poling and Ava Padgett made the trip. Poling carded a 70, while Padgett was one stroke behind her with a 71. The Eagles will compete in the WIC championships Saturday, Aug. 29 at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil and should be at full strength with junior Ainslie Winton back in the lineup. Brown County has finished third the last two seasons. Start time for the event is 9 a.m.

Brown Co.: Annika Evenson 97 (All-Conference), Abby Padgett 106, Christy Sebastian 107, Avery Patterson 109, Ainslie Winton 110.

Coach’s comments: With ideal playing conditions and a favorable course setup, the Brown County High School girls golf team posted a 419 and grabbed the fifth spot in Saturday’s WIC championships played at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil. Junior Annika Evenson finished 10th in the event with a 97 to lead the Eagles and earned All-Conference honors. While no other Eagle broke the “100” barrier, the scores were tightly bunched. The host Northview Knights won the event with a 378. The Knights’ Brooklee Bussing shot an 80 to take medalist honors. “We had two girls in the 40s for the first time this season. Evenson and Sebastian each carded a 46 on the front side, and our team score on the front was a 197, 40 strokes better than our nine-hole average. That is definitely encouraging,” said co-coach Brad Baughman. The Eagles host Jennings County Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m., and then entertain Eastern Greene the very next day at 5 p.m.

Cross-country

Aug. 29

Coach’s comments: The BCHS cross-county teams took part in the Franklin Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29. Abby Fleetwood got the Eagles off to a good start. Fleetwood finished third overall, running a 19:47 on the 5K course. Fellow teammate, Hadley Gradolf captured a top-10 finish, finishing 10th in 20:43. The Eagles also received good performances from Emma DeBord, who ran 23:04, and Madalyn Purlee, who clocked a personal best of 23:34. The Eagles rested two runners, so they didn’t have a team score. The Eagles finished 11th of 17 on the boys side. Chase Austin had a great performance for the Eagles, as he finished fifth overall in an impressive time of 16:47. Cord Smith also had a strong finish for the Eagles, as he clocked a time of 18:44. Rhett Silbaugh improved his 2019 Franklin time by nearly two minutes, crossing in 18:55. Blake Wagler and Waylon Patrick worked well together through the race. Wagler finished in 19:34 and Patrick ran 19:38 to round out the scoring for the Eagles. Other Eagle finishers: Clay Austin, 21:28; Corbin Brahaum, 22:15; Charlie Webb, 22:28; Ivan Thomas, 25:06. Tuesday night, the Eagles will head to Edgewood to take part in the Mustang Invitational.
