SPORTS BRIEFS: Hilly Half happening; learn to dance; lifeguard training offered

Hilly Half half-marathon runners take off from the starting line Nov. 11. Runners and walkers from all over Indiana and a couple neighboring states came to Brown County State Park to participate in a half-marathon, 10K or 5K. Race proceeds benefited the Brown County YMCA. Big Woods/Quaff ON! Brewing Co. was this year's title sponsor.

Annual half-marathon set for November

The Brown County YMCA Hilly Half-Marathon will take place in person the morning of Saturday, Nov. 21. The race starts and finishes at the saddle barn/lower shelter house in Brown County State Park. Virtual options are also available.

The cost to register varies on registration date and race choice. The lowest prices are offered now through Sept. 14.

New, free classes available at the YMCA

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., is offering free workshops this month:

  • Intro to Dance Lessons, for adults, on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 and 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., instructed by Kendrick Hickman. Social distancing will be maintained by having six-foot poles between dancers. Call 765-346-9611 for more information.
  • Cheer/Tumbling Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 12. Toddler Tumbling for ages 18 months and up will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m.; Total Tumbling for ages 3 to 5 will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m.; and Children’s Cheer for ages 7 to 12 will be from 11 a.m. to noon. Lifeguard training happening this month

The Brown County YMCA will host American Red Cross lifeguard training Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20.

The course includes certification in ARC lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, assuming that candidates successfully complete the written and physical skills tests.

Online training is completed on the trainee’s own and must be completed by Friday, Sept. 18. That portion of the course is 12 hours.

Candidates must be responsible, reliable, able to perform under pressure, swim 300 yards continuously, be at least 15 years old and have reliable transportation.

The cost is $175 and includes instruction and materials. The deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 14.

Wellness event planned at the Story Inn

STORY — The Story Inn Bed and Breakfast will host Wellness in the Woods on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Put on by DNK Presents, the outdoor day retreat will start with an hour long yoga session in the barn, followed by a guided hike and meditation.

Lunch will be served on the patio at Story Inn restaurant.

Goat yoga happening at goat farm

BELMONT — Sunset Goat Yoga will be offered at the Goat Conspiracy, 6022 E. Kent Road, Thursday, Sept. 17 from 7 to 8 p.m.

The class is adapted to all levels and will be outside in the outdoor pavilion with sand flooring. Mats are provided or participants can bring their own.

Space is limited to accommodate social distancing. Masks are required until participants are on their mats.

Women’s mountain biking weekend set for fall

DNK Presents will host Campside Sessions Women’s Mountain Bike Camp Saturday through Sunday, Sept. 18 to 20, at Brown County State Park.

Participants will be instructed by professional coaches. Meals and primitive on-site camping is included.
