Rhett Silbaugh also had a top-10 finish, coming in fifth overall. On the girls side, the Eagles competed again with only four girls, so they did not have a team score. However, all the girls ran strong and competed well. Abby Fleetwood finished third overall, clocking a time of 21:01. Coach’s comments: The Eagles didn’t start the week like they wanted with a 2-3 loss to the Tigers of Triton Central to kick off a three-match home stand. With a little changing of the lineup with our top three singles players, we got decisive victories for new No. 1 singles player Nolan Patterson and No. 2 singles player Josh Miller. Aidan Burt playing singles for just the second time this season lost a close first set tie-break and then lost the second set 2-6, but played well. Our doubles teams struggled with the attacking style of play of their counterparts, but made adjustments and made the match a seesaw battle with just a few little breaks not going our way. Our JV players continued to get more valuable match experience that will continue to help them develop into better players for next year’s Eagles. The Eagles will face a tough Olympian squad on Wednesday.

Coach’s comment: The Eagles took on a solid Olympian team from Columbus East tonight, but fell 2-3. This was day two of three consecutive days of tennis for the Eagles. With yet another switch of the playing lineup, the No. 2 doubles team of Josh Miller and Eli Sichting completed a comeback to win their match in three sets. The switchup allowed a different playing combination that seemed to be very productive. The other Eagle victory came from Nolan Patterson playing No. 1 singles for the second consecutive night. This match was very competitive, as each player would take a small lead only to see the other do the same over the two-plus hours of competitive play. After battling some health issues in the first set, he came back to take the second set in a thrilling tie-break (8-6) to force a third set. Since the overall match was decided, a third set super-tie-break was played. Like their previous sets, this one went the distance, with Nolan winning 10-8. At No. 2 singles, Aidan played his best tennis and was very competitive against a fellow senior. Reid continued to play at a high level and just came up short in his match at No. 3 singles. No. 1 doubles duo Spencer and Noah had a rough night, as they were not really in sync and had trouble finding a rhythm that they are used to, but the Columbus East team was extremely disciplined and just made a few more shots than us. Our JV had their own struggles tonight, as this Olympian team came to play. Jack Sichting had a good night with an 8-2 win for the lone Eagle win. The Eagles will conclude this three-match home stand tomorrow with a 5 p.m. match against the Patriots from Owen Valley in a WIC match. The Eagles hope to find the winning combination to get them back on the winning track and get a much-needed WIC victory. As always, we are glad to have had the opportunity to play the game we love. A few more wins would be nice, but can’t win any match without the chance to play.

Brown County 4, Owen Valley 1

No. 1 singles: Colby Beckwith (OV) d. Nolan Patterson (BC) 1-6, 6-1, 1-0(5)

No. 3 singles: Noah Cochran (BC) d. Kolton Jackson (OV) 6-1, 7-5

No. 1 doubles: Spencer Blee/Josh Miller (BC) d. Kaleb Dill/Zack Hamilton (OV) 6-2, 6-3

No. 2 doubles: Reid Davis/Eli Sichting (BC) d. Kage Brown/Carlos Trevino (OV) 6-1, 6-0

JV

Owen Valley 2, Brown County 2

No. 1 singles: Jack Sichting (BC) d. Drew Kristoff (OV) 9-8 (8)

No. 2 singles: Dev Patel (OV) d. Brandon Saechao (BC) 8-1

No. 1 doubles: Kayden Hamilton/Carsen Robertson (OV) d. Daylen Dees/Jon Kirchoffer (BC) 6-0

No. 2 doubles: Daylen Dees/Jon Kirchhofer (BC) d. Evan Bryant/Joe Pursell (OV) 6-2

Coach’s comments: The Eagles got back on the winning track with a 4-1 victory over the Patriots of Owen Valley in a Western Indiana Conference match. The doubles teams lead the Eagles tonight as new No. 2 duo of Reid Davis/Eli Sichting easily defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-0, and were quickly followed off the court by Spencer Blee/Josh Miller. The third point came on No. 2 singles player Aidan Burt as he won by twin 6-1 scores. Noah Cochran, getting the rare opportunity to play singles, was also victorious at No. 3. Noah used his extensive doubles playing experience to his advantage and came back from a 4-5 deficit to win the last three games to take a 7-5 second set for the victory. The Eagles’ lone loss was No. 1 singles player Nolan Patterson, who still might be fighting some fatigue issues from the past two nights. He looked very comfortable in his first set and seemed to tighten up in the second. With the match already in the talons of the Eagles, it was decided to play a 10-point super tie-break for a third set. On the JV side, Jack Sichting playing at No. 1 singles might have played the longest JV pro-set (first to eight games) in Eagles tennis history. Jack completed his 9-8 (8) victory long after most of the varsity matches were complete. Getting a very good victory at No. 2 doubles were sophomore Daylen Dees and freshman Jon Kirchhofer. The Eagles will head to the nest for much-needed rest over the long weekend and will take flight next week as they travel to Edgewood on two consecutive nights (Wednesday and Thursday) to play two WIC foes in West Vigo and host school Edgewood.

Girls golf

Sept. 1

Jennings County 199, Brown County 209

Brown Co.: Annika Evenson 51, Abby Padgett 51, Ainslie Winton 53, Christy Sebastian 54.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles welcomed a new opponent, the Jennings County Panthers, to their 2020 golf schedule and dropped a close match to them Tuesday at Salt Creek Golf Retreat. Brown County posted a 209, 36 strokes better than their last home outing nearly two weeks ago. The Eagles benefited from four scores who were tightly bunched. Annika Evenson and Abby Padgett each fired a 51, while Ainslie Winton and Christy Sebastian carded a 53 and 54 respectively. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Panther top two players made the difference in the match. Sophia Curry turned in an impressive 42 at No. 1, while No. 2 Alexis Carson took a 47. “That 209 was certainly a welcome sight,” said co-coach Brad Baughman. “It would really be nice to trim a few more strokes off tomorrow in our match with Eastern Greene,” Baughman added. “We have girls capable of scoring in the 40s with consistency; they just are not there yet,” he said. The Eagles host Eastern Greene Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.

Sept. 2

Brown County 197, Eastern Greene 256

Brown Co.: Avery Patterson 43, Abby Padgett 49, Annika Evenson 52, Ainslie Winton 53, Savannah Poling 62, Mattie Satter 64, Ava Padgett 66.

Coach’s comments: Behind sophomore Avery Patterson’s career-best 43, the Eagles posted their low nine-hole score of the season, a 197, to defeat the Eastern Greene Thunderbirds Wednesday at Salt Creek Golf Course. The Eagles got a 49 from junior Abby Padgett, also a career best. Annika Evenson contributed a 52, and Ainslie Winton fired a 53 to account for the rest of the Eagle scoring. “This was an exceptionally productive week. Heading into the WIC championships, our nine-hole average was 237. This week, we shoot a 209 and 197. I am so proud of and happy for the girls. Their hard work and decision making are paying dividends,” stated co-coach Brad Baughman. The Eagles will not compete again until Tuesday, Sept. 8, when they play Owen Valley at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Gosport.
