A 28-year-old Brown County man died on Jan. 16 when the car he was working on rolled off a jack in what has been described as a “tragic accident.”

Aaron Fox was working on a vehicle in the driveway of a relative’s home on Dogwood Lane when he was killed, Coroner Earl Piper said on Jan. 25. Piper had conducted an autopsy on Fox late last week. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to mechanical compression of the chest. Piper deemed the death accidental.

A family member found Fox outside about 10 minutes after he had gone out to work on the vehicle’s exhaust system using a scissor-style jack. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A toxicology test also will be done, but Piper said he did not expect the results to change the cause or manner of death.

In his obituary, Fox was described as a “beloved son and brother.” Fox enjoyed working on cars, particularly adjusting their sound systems. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing in Florida where he would out-fish anyone on his boat, his obit states.

“Even as a small child, Aaron loved working with tools and learning to build things with his dad,” his obituary reads.

His favorite sport was basketball, which he played in junior high, and he was described as a “versatile artist” who shared his work with family and friends.

A memorial service was scheduled for Jan. 29 at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown. His obituary can be found here.
