School board approves 2018-2019 school calendar

The Brown County School Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the calendar for next school year at the Dec. 7 meeting.

Superintendent Laura Hammack said this calendar fulfills teachers’ requests, including having the last school day be before Memorial Day, a full week for fall break and three full weekends for winter break.

The first day of the 2018-19 school year will be Wednesday, Aug. 8, with teachers returning Monday, Aug. 6.

Fall break will be from Monday to Friday, Oct. 8 to 12. Thanksgiving break will run from Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 21 to 23.

Winter break for students will go from Friday, Dec. 21 to Friday, Jan. 4 with students returning Monday, Jan. 7.

One change to the calendar next school year is that Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Jan. 21, and Presidents Day on Feb. 18 will both be snow make-up days. If snow days are needed, students might need to go to school on those days to make them up.

“That will help if we have snow, then, to not have to tack on so many at the end of the year,” Hammack said of the change.

Spring break 2019 will be Monday to Friday, March 18 to 22. The last day of school is set for Thursday, May 23 with an evening commencement scheduled on Friday, June 7.

More snow make-up days, if needed, will be at the end of May, from May 28 to 31 and June 3 to 7.

A teacher work day/snow make-up day is also in the calendar on Friday, May 24. There will be no school on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, if students still have days to make up.

Hammack said an “overwhelming majority” of school employees favored this calendar. Multiple calendar options were sent out via email to all school employees for their input.

School administrators and the teacher discussion team also worked to put the calendar together, Hammack said.

“We feel like this is a calendar that represents all of our team members. It’s not much different at all from the calendar we’re experiencing this year. I think our families will enjoy it,” Hammack said.
