Kids welcome to become state Senate pages
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Senate is accepting applications for the Senate Page Program.
The full-day interactive program gives students in the sixth through 12th grades the opportunity to tour the Indiana Statehouse, observe session debates on the Senate floor and assist staff with age-appropriate tasks. Students will also meet with their state senator.
The 2018 session will run from mid-January through early March. Positions fill quickly, so applicants are advised to sign up early. Pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the legislative session starting at 8:30 a.m. and dismissing at 3:30 p.m. Serving as a page is considered an excused absence from school.

High school teachers, get free supplies in 2018
BLOOMINGTON — High school teachers in Brown, Greene, Lawrence, Monroe and Owen counties will be eligible to shop for supplies at Teachers Warehouse in Bloomington beginning in January.
First shopping dates at the warehouse, 524 N. Fairview St., will be Wednesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 3 and 4, from 2 to 6 p.m. Regular hours will resume Monday, Jan. 8: From 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.
Teachers Warehouse, a nonprofit organization, was launched in 2004 by the Bloomington Rotary Club. It has grown to serve public school teachers in five counties, with support from all area Rotary clubs as well as individuals, organizations and businesses. The warehouse is totally volunteer-powered, with 80 regular and special-event volunteers.

Electrical classes offered at career center
A new round of electrical classes will begin Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Brown County Career Resource Center. The program includes six classes to prepare for the local licensure test — two classes from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 12 weeks.

Ivy Tech classes coming to resource center in January
The Brown County Career Resource Center will offer Ivy Tech Bloomington classes during the spring semester, which starts in January.
Offerings will include English Composition 111, Math 123, Interpersonal Communication 102 and Psychology 101.

Sign language classes available at CRC
American Sign Language classes are offered at the Brown County Career Resource Center. A new beginning class will start in February. Classes run from 6 to 8 p.m. for eight weeks.

High school seniors can apply for Simon scholarships
BLOOMINGTON — Simon Youth Community Scholarships will make awards to members of the Class of 2018 who live near a Simon Mall.
Students in zip codes 47448 and 47435 are eligible. They will receive up to $1,500 toward tuition and other expenses. The application period ends Feb. 15.
A regional Award of Excellence also will be given. Those students will have the opportunity to receive $10,000 — $2,500 for up to four years.
Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those who are first-generation college students also will be given close consideration.

Certified nursing assistant classes are offered periodically throughout the year at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St. The next CNA class will begin March 13.

High school equivalency class times set each week
Classes focused on the high school equivalency assessment exam — formerly called GED classes — are taught year-round from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St.
Students who cannot attend then can arrange instruction by appointment or by distance learning.
Those enrolled in adult education may be eligible for free job training through WorkOne.

Small-business counseling available for free
The Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St., offers individual small-business counseling sessions through the Service Corps of Retired Executives.
There is no charge for the sessions, which meet in the morning on the first Thursday of every month. An appointment is required.
