GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jan. 23

Brown County 49, Southwestern 42

BC: 16 14 4 15 — 49

S: 6 4 24 18 — 42

Brown Co. (10-9, 11th WIC East): Dasia Wilkerson 1 FG, 4-6 FT, 6 TP; Allison Stogsdill 5 FG, 3 3P, 3-8 FT, 22 TP; Anna Fleetwood 1 FG, 2-2 FT, 4 TP; Aubrey Hollander 2 FG, 3-4 FT, 7 TP; Gracie Matlock 4 FG, 8 TP; Savannah Lovins 1 FG, 2 TP.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, then were able to withstand a second-half surge from the Spartans of Southwestern to pull out the win 49-42. Hot shooting and solid defense were the keys to Brown County building a 20-point halftime lead. Allison Stogsdill poured in 14 of her game-high 22 points before the break. While the Eagles went cold in the third quarter, they were able to knock down 9 of 15 free throws in the final quarter to help keep the Spartans at bay. Next up for Brown County is their final home contest of the season on Thursday with Monrovia.

Jan. 25

Brown County 34, Monrovia 33

BC: 10 80 3 13 — 34

M: 5 2 11 15 — 33

Brown Co. (11-9, 11th WIC East): Allison Stogsdill 2 FG, 4-5 FT, 8 TP; Anna Fleetwood 1 3P, 3-4 FT, 6 TP; Kathleen McCann 1 FG, 2 TP; Savannah Lovins 2 FG, 1-2 FT, 5 TP; Aubrey Hollander 3 FG, 6 TP; Gracie Matlock 1 FG, 2-4 FT, 4 TP; Abigail Hollander 1 3P, 3 TP.

Coach’s comments: On a night when the Eagles struggled to put points on the board, they were able to rely on their defense to help pull out the win. A strong defensive effort in the first half held the visitors from Monrovia to just 7 points. But the Bulldogs came storming back in the third quarter and cut the lead to 21-18 heading into the final quarter. A tightly contested early part of the quarter then saw BC go on a run to up the lead to 10 midway through the fourth quarter. Monrovia had one final run in them and actually took a 1-point lead with just under 2 minutes to go. The Eagles held strong and ended up with one final possession with just over 20 seconds remaining. Anna Fleetwood took advantage and drove hard to the rim and drew a foul, sending her to the line. She calmly knocked down both free throws to give the Eagles a 1-point lead. Monrovia followed up with a turnover and a foul to send BC back to the line with 5 seconds on the clock. In spite of missing the front end of the one-and-one, a last second 3-point attempt from the top of the key rattled off the rim and sent the Eagles to victory. It was also a special night as the Eagles honored seniors Kathleen McCann and Savannah Lovins for their dedication to the program.

Jan. 27

Trinity Lutheran 50, Brown County 47

TL: 13 14 10 13 — 50

BC: 12 11 12 12 — 47

Brown Co. (11-10, 11th WIC East): Dasia Wilkerson 1 FG, 2 TP; Allison Stogsdill 4 FG, 1-4 FT, 9 TP; Anna Fleetwood 2 FG, 4 3P, 3-4 FT, 19 TP; Aubrey Hollander 4 FG, 8 TP; Gracie Matlock 1 FG, 5-6 FT, 7 TP; Kathleen McCann 1 FG, 2 TP.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles battled a talented Trinity Lutheran squad down to the wire but came up just short in the end, 47-50. In a game that saw the Cougars lead for the majority of time, it was a battle right from the tip. Anna Fleetwood’s hot shooting kept BC in it the first half as they went to the locker room down just 4. The Eagles continued to battle through the third quarter and cut the lead to 2 headed into the fourth. BC used a nice run to actually take a brief, 1-point lead, but Trinity bounced back and stretched their lead back to 7. The Lady Eagles wouldn’t give up and came back with a long 3 by Fleetwood and a free throw to cut the lead down to 3. A Cougar turnover gave BC one last opportunity to tie the game, but the Eagles were unable to get a good look.

Columbus East 293.5, Jennings County 184.5, Seymour 177.5, Madison 168.5, Columbus North 114.5, Brown County 80, Southwestern (Hanover) 78 Scottsburg 70, West Washington 40, Switzerland County 17

Brown Co.: 106 Katlyn Butcher 6th, 113 David Tucker 3rd, 132 Bryce Denton 4th, 145 Josh Parry 6th, 160 Justin Burns 5th, 182 Jason Stratton 6th, 195 Levi Mullins 3rd, Hwt Matthew Duncan 5th

Coach’s comments: In 2017, the Eagles advanced four to regionals, but only scored 71 points. So, despite the difference in advancing wrestlers, the team is wrestling better. In addition, this year, two wrestlers will be alternates at regionals including Justin Burns and Matthew Duncan. The wrestlers will need to win their opening match at Jeffersonville High School to advance to Evansville’s semi-state.
