Skate park project gets boost from Tony Hawk Foundation

Kids on Wheels has received more money for the construction of its skate park through the Tony Hawk Foundation.

The foundation announced last night on Facebook that Kids on Wheels had received one of 11 skate park grants given throughout the country.

The grant amount is $5,000, said Kids on Wheels parent adviser Colleen Smith. Her son, Isaiah, is project manager for KOW.

Skateboarder Tony Hawk created the foundation in 2002 to help fund and create safe places for skateboarding in communities around the country. The foundation has helped to fund skate parks in all 50 states, with new parks being funded every year.

Kids on Wheels are in the midst of trying to raise $50,000 by Sept. 22 so that they can get $50,000 more through a matching grant opportunity from CreatINg Places, through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

Smith said she will reach out to the Tony Hawk Foundation to see if they would write a letter stating they wanted their grant to go toward this fundraising campaign.

Local resident and waitress Anna Hofstetter donated a $1,000 tip she received last month while working at a local hotel to the campaign.

If the full $50,000 is raised, Smith said the park could be built at the county’s Deer Run Park this fall.
