Club news for week of Sept. 12

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, will no longer meet at 1 p.m., but will continue to conduct meetings at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be Sept. 11. The public is welcome.

Richard Powell, an expert on whetstones, will be the guest speaker at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. His program, titled “The Search for Henry Cross Continues,” will take place in lower-level Room B of the Brown County Library, 205 Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Preservation group

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. preservation group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. All are welcome.

Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

Bob Kirlin, president of the board of directors over the Brown County Playhouse, will discuss the history and future of the Playhouse when the Brown County Rotary Club meets for breakfast Thursday, Sept. 13. The meeting begins at 7:15 a.m. at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

Kirlin is a real estate agent with Hills O’ Brown. He has served as an innkeeper, shopkeeper, president of the local Rotary Club, CEO of the Brown County Community Foundation, president of the town council, impresario of “Dinger of a Day” and has been involved with other local societies, boards and committees.

Members of the community are welcome at the meeting, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to be of service.

Genealogy group

The Brown County Genealogical Society meets from 1 to 3 p.m. the second Thursday of the month in Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Sept. 13.

Art alliance

GNAW BONE — Art Alliance Brown County will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 at Bear Wallow Distillery, 4484 Old State Road 46.

The alliance is a club open to all area artists, including musicians, poets, thespians, textile artists and others creating two- and three-dimensional art. Focused on supporting and encouraging the arts in Brown County, the club has become a social networking group. The alliance meets every other month.

Current board members include Lory Winford, president; M.K. Watkins, vice president; Theresa Shadley, treasurer; and Heather Nicholson, secretary.

Weight-loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to try the club for free. Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets at 6:30 p.m the third Monday of each month in a lower-level meeting room at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Sept. 17. The public is welcome.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meetings will be Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Garden club

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Brown County has a monthly board meeting from 10 a.m. to noon the second Monday of each month. Meetings are conducted in lower-level meeting room A of the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be Oct. 8. The public is welcome.
